FAREWELL TO SIR CHARLES GAVAN DUFFY.
Heaven guide thee, Gavan Duffy, on The ocean's heaving breast, And favouring gale fill every sail, That wafts thee to the west. The tears of joy will fill thine eyes, When from the stormy main, They see loved Erin slowly rise, To glad thy heart again. And joyfully will Erin see; And bless the kindly fate, That brings again, across the main, A man of " Forty-eight." A people's voice will welcome thee 1 And bright the emerald sheen That smiling spring will Erin bring, For one who loves the preen. And well may Erin welcome thee, And Erin's sons be proud, To see thee tread so loftily Above the venal crowd. Although thy brow be wrinkled now, Thy heart will be elate, And throbbing vein will feel again, The heart of " Forty-eight." Of fearless hearts and lofty minde, The friends of thy youth's prime, Uut few, thou'lt find, are left behind The sweeping scythe of Time. In Freedom's cause O'Meaher fell, He sleeps beyond the wave ; And gallant Mitchell, dying, sought And found an Irish grave. And he of Thomond's royal raca, Has paid the debt of fate ; But still lives on from sire to sou, The cause of " Forty-eight." When Erin reads the epitaph On Robeit Emmet's grave, Let thy bright page bring to that age, The memory of the brave. Full many a change thy mind hath planned, And fought for long ago, Is now the rights of Ireland, Wrenched from her ancient foe. But Britons now feel freedom's glow, And honours yield, not hate. To men like you, the brave and true — The men of " Forty -eight." Ashburton. j\ p g q<j£
