THE BLOOD OF ST. JANUARIUS.
The miracle of the liquefaction of the blood of St. Januarius took place at Naples as usual on the 2nd of May. The vial- containing the miraculous blood were carried in procession the preceding day to the Church of St. Clara and placed opposite the relic of the head. After forty-five minutes of prayer, it partly dissolved, a portion remaining hard. On returning to the cathedral, the blood was found hardened, but afterwards the greater portion dissolved, and it was replaced in this condition. The next day, Sunday, when the blood was exposed to the veneration of the people, the hardened portion dissolved. Towards evening it was altogether liquefied. In the morning the blood was found hard, and somewhat increased in volume, and after eleven minutes of prayer, it dissolved altogether. The phase of the blood dissolving with a portion remaining hard has been observed frequently.
