Mr. Skene reports for the week ending October 1, 1879 :— The month just closed has been a very quiet one, but affairs are now giving signs of improvement. The demand for station people has begun. Ploughmen and couples, also useful hands and dairy people are wanted. If the late arrivals are the right sort for farm and rough work, they will gradually settle down, but we do not require them in these dull times. Mustercrs are being asked for, but wages are not fixed yet. Gardeners, station and hotel cooks, boots, waiters, country smiths, and carpenteis, are occasionally asked for. Female servants in all departments arc iv good demand, and get good wages. Wages in all other departments continue same as laat week.
