An interesting anecdote is related in the Times in connectioa with the receut death of the Rev. John Mitchell Chapman, M.A., formerly Fellow and Tutor of Balliol College, Oxford, and late Rector of Tending, Essex. At Oxford he had among his pupils the present Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster, the Archbishop *of Canterbury, and Viscount Cardwell. S. T., writing to the Times says :: — •' It was in May, 1549, that he was at my table at luncheon when the conversation turned to Balliol College, Mr. Chapman remarking that of all h,s many pupils there were none more dear to him than Mr. Tait an.l Mr. Manning ; that on one occasion they left the room together, and he said to those behind, ' I feel God will spare my Hf«? till I see them both archbishops.' The rest is known, although at that moment lie might not think that the then Mr. Manning would ever be Archbishop of Westminster.' 1
