STRIKE AND RUN AWAY.
In his last number the editor of the Evangelist writes as follows :—: — "St. Patrick's College for Boys is manned by members of the bociety of Jesus. Since the time when we read the memoirs of Port Koyal and the Provincials of Pascal, we have had but one opinion of ttaa celebrated Society ; and while allowing that its members are
often self-denying and able, we believe and hold that they are the last men to whom we should relegate the education of boys. The avpwed principles of the Order should at least decide Protestants to think once and again before making up their minds to commit the formation of the character and the instruction of their boys to men who still hold the views which Pascal has so graphically exposed and so strongly condemned in his celebrated Provincials." This insinuates a great deal and is intended to leave the reader under the impression that there is something very terrible indeed in the principles of the Jesuits. But having delivered this blow the editor gallops off on the " Memoirs of Port Royal and the Provincials of Pascal." This is cowardly and unjust. A candid man anxious to know and propagate about men does not pass by their own works and himself with the representation made concerning them by tueir enemies. This, however, is precisely what the editor of the Evangelist does. And this is what we deservedly designate striking and then running away. Let the editor of the Evangelist learn the principles of the Jesuits as explained by themselves and not by their enemies and, we believe, he will soon change his mind.
