HIBERNIAN AUSTRALASIAN CATHOLIC BENEFIT SOCIETY, DUNEDIN BRANCH, No. 73.
The annual meeting of the above Branch was held on Thursday, 30th December. Previous to commencing the business of the evening, the President briefly introduced Mr. J. J. Woods, P.P. of the Lawrence Branch to the members. Mr. Woods was accorded a hearty reception. The principal item of correspondence was a letter from the corresponding Secretary, in reference to the appointment of deputies to represent the New Zealand branches at the annual meeting. Several members expressed their opinion that it was desirable to be represented. Brother E. Carroll moved that the Secretary write to the several branches in Otago, with a view to thorough representation at the forthcoming annual meeting, the cost for each deputy not to exceed .£l . Brother Cantwell in seconding the resolution, stated that it was necessary to be thoroughly represented, otherwise, the Melbourne district would get alterations in the General Laws, which would be detrimental to the interests of the Society in New Zealand. It was also to be borne in mind that the Melbourne district was not supported by all its branches. The resolution was carried unanimously. The next business was the election of officers for the office of President. There was a spirited contest, and the choice of the members was Brother John Brennan. For the office of Vice-President there was two candidates. Brother J. J. Connor, however, declined to contest the election, he was willing at all times to further the interests of the Society without holding office ; he left that honor for other members. The President declared Brother J. Leary duly elected. Secretary and Treasurer, Brothers Cantwell and Connellan, re-elected for the fourth time without opposition. Chemists, Messrs. Howard and Raymond. In consequence of the lateness of the hour, all further business was adjourned until Monday evening, 10th January.
