Professor Black: reports upon 14 samples of imported sweets, purchased by Mr. Lumb from various confectioners in Duuedin for analysis, and of Vthioh tho following is a resume :—: — 14 Samples Obtained from Various Confectioners in Dunedin. Nos. 419 to 432 Sweets are all abiectionable, owing to tho large quantity of Sulphate of Lime (Plaster of Paris), or other earthy matter, they contain. The coloring matter is abo objectionable, being paitly Prussian Blue. I consider those far inferior to those of local manufacture which I lutj a?mlysed. Professor Black again reports upon 23 Samties taken by Inspector Lumb from, tho Manufactory of MESSRS. R. HUDSON AND CO., as follows : Nos. 395 to 378, Samples of various kinds of sweets, biscuits, &c, the sweets do not conlain Plaster of Paris, Sulphate of Lime, btarch, Flour, or any objectionable coloring matter, or any deleterious ingredients. Tho absence of Plaster of Paris, or any objectionable coloring matter, recommends these sweets strongly. They are, iv my opinion, a very superior article. Biscuits, Oakcs, &c, &0., contain no ingredient deleterious to health. They are all skilfully manufactured, well fired, and should take a good position in the market.
