It is proposed to construct a Railway from Dunedin to the Oceai Beach at the Forbury on the one side, and on the other down by Anderson's" Bay and tlie eact side of the Harbor, as far as Portobello^. with the view of continuing it to the Heads. So soon as possible, it is proposed tv commence near the cro»sing of the Clulha Builway at th© Anderson's Bay Road, making use of the Clutha Line from Dunedia to ti:ut point, until the Company thinks it desirable to construct a separate lino from its own terminus in the City. The promoters are satisfied tliat such a railway will not only b& directly profitable as an investment, but that it will prove an immense boon to the inhabitants of Duuedin, and the settlers in tho district through whioh it will pass. Tlie Forbury Branch will pass the Caledonian Grounds, Gasworks, and Racecourse, and terminate at or near the .Forbury Head ; und it is believed that the passenger traffic on this part ulone will pay a good interest on the capital recessary to construct the whole line. Tha other Branch will leave the Anderson's Bay " Road, beyond the Buy View Hotel, aud proceed to Anderson's Bayv and thence down the Jiast side of the Harbor to Portobello. This line will seoure a considerable goods traffic in Lime, Timber, Coal, Bricks, and Farm und Garden Produce ; while the rapidly increasing popularity of the sunny slopes of the Peninsula for summer residences uiid pleasure excursions, will draw a large passenger traffic. Botli kinds of truffle will le very much increased by what will no doubt lollow the construction of tho railway, viz. — steamer from Port Chalmers to Poitobelto, siud a deep water wharf at tlie Heads, when tlio line is finished that length. Tlie Provincial Government, fully recognising the public import nncc of the proposed undertaking, has promised to give all publio lands required fur the construction of the line, including sufficient land for a Dunedin Terminus in a central sii'iutijn ; and the Government has also unitertakan, if necessary, to work the lino with its rolling: stock on fair aud reasonable terms. ! The Promoters have every reason to believe that all private lands required lor the liuo will be freely given by their respective owners. Mr D. Proudfoothas already ottered to give, without compensation, a stiip of land lluougn the whole breadth ot his valuable property near the Ocean Beach. Uhe following nwy be taken as a rough estimate of the approximate tost ot tho ditfereut sections, exclusive of- rolliug stock :— ' From Dunedin to Ocean Beach ... 2b miles £7,000 From near Mr Tolmio's house to Portobello, via .Anderson's Bay... 9h » 30,000 From Pcrtobello to the Heads ... 5* „ 18,000 £55,000 Aplicationa for Shares may be made to the undersigned.
