SIGNS OF IMPROVEMENT. AUCKLAND.

JT is a noteworthy fact that at our recent election for the Superintendent, a drunken man was scarcely seen. Whether this was owing to the etream#tance that " Good Templarism " is greatly in vogue here at present I cannot tell. The Good Templars are very zealous in the temperance cause; thera can be no doubt of that. I only wish Icouid say as much for the zeal of the Catholic people of this place m the same cause. But alas ! and a lack a-d-»y ! They allow their Protestant brethren to outstrip them far in that good work. This is not to their honor considering they are the co-religioni^s and fellow-country-men of Father Mathew, the great apostle of temperance. King Drink is a shameless and masterful tyrant v and the the Catholic people by the power of the Churctt ought to s-mite him down Archbishop Manning advises the people to " strike " aguinst the publicans, and lock them in. I think the Good Tempiars are organising a pretty extensive "strike" agarast the publicans, aud possibly the result wa» tho absence of any drunken men at last electioi. But no tem-peronce movement will ever deserve the public confidence till it do what Father Mathew did— bring down the excise levenue one half, and cause large distilleries to " shud up."— Still the diminution of public drunkenness Bpeaks well for tho labors of the Good Templars in Auckland.
