AUCKLAND
JOHN BTJXI'S PAMILY ALL BECOMING- CATHOLICS. At a meeting recently held at Homerton, in England, for the purpose of opening a temporary church in that place, the Key. G. Akers, the pastor, said — "Being an Englishman and a Tory myself, I never like to bo present at any meeting without proposing the health of Her Majesty the Queen." Her health accordingly was proposed by him, and drunk with applause, the health of the Pope of course having been previously given. The Right Rev. the Bishop Auxiliary, who presided at the meeting, said — " In our day a great many things were being done by steam, und, judging from the rapid conversions, it looked as if Catholics too were beiug made by steam. He hoped ere long to see England altogether Catholic ;" and he proposed the health of Father Akers, the worthy p.istor, who, in acknowledging the compliment, said — " At first I was depressed to hear that in Homerton there were only 150 Catholics, but I found there were 300. Very soon they reached 600, and lam now proud to say there are 1000." Well might the Bishop say that in England now Catholics were being made by steam. The Otago ' Times' and your Protestant readers generally had better take a note of this. As yet the Citholic Church is hardly working with steam power in New Zealand, but she is working vigorously notwithstanding. Laic.
