THE SOUTH AUSTRALIAN EDUCATION SYSTEM IN RELATION TO CATHOLICS.

The « Southern Cross,' a Catholic journal published at Adelaide, says • — " The Bill before Parliament does not satisfy Catholics, and, as it is at present, will never satisfy them, because they will not have am thine less than denominational schools. They have not used the schools under the old system, and they will not use them under the new one. They have m their poverty made efforts to educate their children, and they will continue to make more vigorous efforts for the time to come. Ifc has been said that the Bible was excluded to please Catholics j but the fact is, from the introduction of the measure to the present moment, they were silent, they offered no opinion, they made no remonstrance ; for they have borne iii mind that their petitions to Parliament on former occasions to obtain justice, to be treated with equality, to be placed on a level with their fellow-colonists of other denominations in the matter of education, were denied. Therefore they have not petitioned against the present measure ; but let not; their silence be construed into an approval of the system, of which they disapprove, and with which they will not have anything to do. Catholics are not ungenerous, narrow-minded, and unprincipled to object to the Bible—to hinder others from having their system of denominational teaching— when they are advocating the same thing for themselves. The majority of the people want denominational education, and this is proved from the fact that almost every denomination ia Adelaide (and the capital leads the country) has either established schools or is endeavoring to do so. The Church of England have their schools, the Baptists have their schools, the Congregationalists have their schools, and the Wesleyans have their schools."
