The doctor was announced to deliver a lecture at Folkestone at three o'clock in the afternoon on " The Fope and his Work in England." As he entered the hall a telegram, juafc arrived from London, was presented to him. He at onca proceeded to- the platform, opened the telegram, t»nd read it aloud. As fat as the wordt could be caught, they were — "Private telegram from- Rome. The Pop© died at ten o'clock this morning." The effect cannot be doscribed. Those present were confounded. The lecture wa9 softened down into a mild and not \erj forcible reference to the solemn event which had been announced.
