PROPERTY STOLEN

Devonport. Between the 16th and 20th February last, from a garage on Motutapu Island, the property of the NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT (Army Department), a standard heavy-duty electric-drill, fitted with § in. Jacobs chuck ; value, £ls. Identification doubtful.

Auckland. —4th or sth March last, from the dwelling of SYLVIA FANNY HUTCHINGS (and others), 17 New Street, Ponsonby, a clock; a suit-case a fur stole; and a squirrel necklet (all recovered); a ladies’ brown velour overcoat with large brown fur collar, brown silk lining, large button on front ; a brown skunk fur stole, about 42 in. long and 6 in. wide, brown satin lining ; a woollen motor-car rug, 72 in. by 36 in., fawn one side and pattern of large checks on other side, fringe at ends ; a light-fawn woollen tablecloth with dark floral border, deep hem, red-ink stain on it ; two pairs of ladies’ kid gloves, one pair grey, the other white; two blouses, one pink embroidered georgette and the other pink embroidered silk crepe ; five pink silk nightdresses ; two pink silk petticoats ; two light-blue woollen bed-jackets ; four pairs of silk and wool stockings ; four pairs of silk stockings ; two cotton interlock nightgowns ; a quantity of ladies’ winter underclothing ; a fibrecane suit-case (probably brown), about 25 in. long, two nickel fasteners, containing a. set of ladies’ green and white silk pyjamas ; two sets of ladies’ pink silk pyjamas ; three pink silk nightdresses ; a pair of ladies’ slippers; a bag with zip-fastener, containing toilet requisites ; a quantity of ladies’ underwear ; a lightfawn three-quarter-size musquash fur coat with shiny finish, Peter Pan collar, slit pockets, hook-fastener at collar, blue-grey-figured silk or marocain lining, small inside pocket ; a double stonemartin fur stole, light-beige toning to brown, about 54 in. long and 6 in. wide, two heads and two tails, fur lining ; a gentlemen’s chromium-plated Primor pocket watch, white dial, Arabic numerals ; a. vV gentlemen’s grey fur-felt hat, size 6| in., white silk lining, “ H. 8.” on band; three pairs of gentlemen’s blue-grey woollen socks, size 11 in. ; and 4s. in money ; total value, £156 2s. Mostly identifiable. The recovered articles were found in possession of John Hill, referred to in Police Gazette, 1945, page 303, who has been convicted of receiving them. He stated that he received them from Moko Marsh, referred to in Police Gazette, 1945, page 301, who, when interviewed, denied the allegation, and no evidence resulted.

Auckland. —l4th or 15th ultimo, from the launch “ Mona Isles ” at Winstone’s Wharf, the property of GEORGE HENRY BARTLETT, a Le Roy oilskin overcoat, size 5, clip-fasteners; aLe Roy oilskin hat, size 6| in.; a navy-blue double-breasted Royal Navy overcoat, size 5, half-belt at back with bayonet clips on it, “ G. H. Bartlett” in white cotton on inside ; a navy-blue woollen pullover with roll collar, long sleeves, “ G.H.8.” on white tape inside collar; a pair of gentlemen’s black shoes with rubber heels, size 8, no toecaps ; a pair of dark-, woollen socks with darker pattern ; four white handkerchiefs, Royal Navy issue, may have “ G.H.8.” on one corner; two pairs of white woollen underpants, “ G.H.8.” on inside near top ; two grey woollen single-bed blankets with a black and four blue stripes at each end ; a light-brown woollen' rug with brown and red checks, tassels on each end ; a sheath-knife, blade about in. long, steel handle; a blue leather suit-case, 30 in. by 18 in. by 10 in., two lock-fasteners; a pair of gentlemen’s black shoes with rubber heels, size 5 ; two white shirts with •blue stripes, size 3, no collars; two white woollen sleeveless singlets ; and a pair of white woollen underpants, M size ; total value, £26 14s. Identifiable except blankets.

Auckland. —Between the 18th ultimo and 9th-instant, from a boat-shed between Giant’s Bite and Karaka Bay, Glendowie, the property of DOVE MAYER ROBINSON, White House, Riddell Road, Glendowie, a 1937 model No. 210 34 h.p. twin-cylinder Johnson Seahorse outboardmotor, serial No. 34052 on fly-wheel spool plate, crack in exhaust-box welded, brass sheer pin in three pieces inside propeller; and about 20 yd. of brown standard size sprat-fishing net, pieces of trawler twine tied to end ; total value, £72 10s. Auckland. — l2th instant, from a motor-car in Elliott Street, the property of DOUGLAS MALCOLM GRACIE, Victoria Street, Hamilton, a dark or mid-brown fibrecane suit-case, about 16 in. by 12 in., sliding lock; a blue artsilk dressing-gown with white spots, men’s size ; a lightblue coat-shirt, men’s size ; a blue cashmere Paisley tie; two pairs of blue-grey fancy socks ; a pair of slippers with fawn checks, size 7, leather soles; two blue fancy handkerchiefs ; a hairbrush with handle, silver plate with “ J.M.E.” thereon ; a reddish-yellow waterproof sponge hag ; a safetyrazor, British make ; a set of poplin pyjamas with blue stripes ; a pair of boy’ s_grey shorts, size 9, Roslyn make, price ticket thereon ; and a cheque-book on the National Bank of New Zealand, Hamilton, containing forms between Nos. 31721-840; total , value, £lO 16s. 3d. Cheque-book and hairbrush identifiable.

Auckland. STEWART WYLIE’S watches stolen (see Police Gazette, 1945, page 338) : The following is a description of one of the six watches of which no descriptions were available at the time : A gentlemen’s silver shockproof and waterproof round or oval Hafis wristlet, Arabic luminous numerals, dark-tan leather wrist-strap; value, £5 15s. Auckland. —Between the 6th and Bth ultimo, the warehouse of KEITH VOGEL McCALLUM, Marua Road, Ellerslie, was broken into and the following stolen : A black Conway Stewart fountain-pen; 15s. in Id. and 2d. stamps; and thirty-two cheque-forms on the Bank of New Zealand, Queen Street, Auckland, Nos. Z. 358008-040, one of which, No. Z. 358008, is made out for £5 and drawn in favour of the Auckland Manufacturers’ Association, but not signed; total value, £2 19s. 2d. Cheque-forms identifiable.

Auckland. llth ultimo, from clothing in the hall of an apartment-house, 169 Hobson Street, the property of PERCY ROY BLAKEY, a gentlemen’s rolled-gold Elgin hunting watch, white dial, black hands and Roman numerals, front case worn ; a ladies’ silver small hunting watch (case turning black), white dial, black hands and numerals ; and a gentlemen’s rolled-gold double watch-chain, 12 in. long, fetter and oval type, small pendant of petrified wood in centre; total value, £lO. Identifiable.

, Auckland. ultimo, from the dwelling of MAVIS ANNE BARNFATHER, 622 Sandringham Road, Owairaka, a brown polished five-valve mantel model H.M.V. radio, serial No. 560, 24 in. by 18 in., white square dial, three control knobs, purchased from Wisemans’, Queen Street. At 10.30 a.m. on above date the following-described Man was seen outside complainant’s dwelling placing the radio in a bluish-green motor-car of light English make, similar to Morris 8 : Age about twenty-three, height about 5 ft. 7 in., thin build, fresh complexion, wavy fair hair; wearing dark clothes.

Auckland. 4th instant, from the Albert Hotel, Queen Street, the property of ARTHUR ILAY BIRD, 25 Pembroke Street, Hamilton, a brown leather suit-case, 30 in. by 18 in. by 8 in., two, nickel clips, leather handle, American labels on outside, containing a gentlemen’s dressing-gown of blanket material with red and blue piping ; a set of gentlemen’s pyjamas with blue and white stripes, X.O.S. size; a white shirt with detached collar; a blue shirt with brown stripes, collar attached ; a pair of socks with brown and grey checks ; six handkerchiefs with coloured borders; a Valet safetyrazor; a shaving-brush and soap; a ladies’ rough serge costume with braid on lapels, purchased in England; a light-blue blouse of sheer silk, button at back of neck; a pink floral satin nightdress, ties at shoulder; a ladies’ paleblue crepe dressing-gown with large red flowers on it; a pair of ladies’ pink and blue floral slippers, size 4 ; a ladies’ white singlet; a pair of white scanties ; a pair of silk stockings, and a cake of Cashmere soap, &c.; total value, £24 ss. fid. Mostly identifiable.

Te Awamutu. Between the 22nd and 28th ultimo, from the staff quarters at the rear of the Te Awamutu Hotel, the property of ALICE BARBARA FLORENCE, waitress, a ladies’ gold small oblong wristlet watch, black hands and Arabic numerals, “A.8.F.” and “28/10/34” on back, black cord band with silver fastener attached to lugs which are wider than watch; and a bracelet made up of oblong and round pieces of paua-shell set in silver and joined with silver links, chip in corner of one oblong piece; total value, £l7 12s. Identifiable.

Gisborne. 3rd March last, from clothing in a dressingshed at the Macßae Baths, the property of JAMES GORDON LOCKWOOD, 2 Hunter Street, Te Hapara, a gentlemen’s metal oblong wristlet watch, No. 4754 L., probably Cortebert make, luminous hands- and numerals, screw-on back with M. Lockwood thereon, black leather wrist-strap about £ in. wide ; value, £lO. Identifiable.

Palmerston North.— 2oth February last, from the bathroom in Ward 3, Public Hospital, the property of KEITH RAMSON COLLIER, Sanson, a gentlemen’s stainless-steel waterproof Titan wristlet watch with screw-on back, pink luminous dial, Arabic numerals, “ K. R. Collier, 25-12-43 ” on back, leather wrist-strap ; value, £9 ss. Identifiable.

Trentham. —6th March last, from a motor-truck outside the Main Ordnance Depot in the Military Camp, the property of the NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT (Army Department), a pair of Carl Zeiss binoculars, Nos. G. 2183 and 893658, in brown leather case ; total value £l7. Binoculars identifiable.

Lower Hutt.— 2Bth ultimo, from Bunny Street, the property- of ALFRED LYLE ANDREW, Heretaunga, a 1939 model four-door sedan Hillman Minx 10 h.p. motor-car, painted air-force blue, chassis No. 05410, engine No. 05472, registration-plates No. 12,590, 1944-45 license No. 103868, pressed-steel wheels, roof fabric repaired; value, £4OO. ““•/Wu tf S&CWtL, /SM

Johnsonville. —28th March last, from the hut of Thomas Nelson Hall, Takapu Road, Tawa Flat, the property of MAURICE JOSEPH DE MUTH, on service overseas, a •22 calibre single-shot Remington rifle, No. 256663 ; value, £2. Identifiable. *£/*>/**£.

Wellington. — l3th ultimo, from a lavatory on the 4th floor of the Post and Telegraph Department Buildings, Herd Street, the property of THOMAS HENRY MERVYN MURTAGH, 23 Home Street,, a gentlemen’s chromium 15-jewel round Mido Swiss wristlet watch, case No. 54690, silver-coloured dial, luminous hands and Arabic numerals, two chips out of back ; value, £6. Identifiable. .

Wellington. lsth or 16th ultimo, from a motor-car outside the Hotel St. George or in ' Kelburn Parade, the property of MARGARET MARY NOTTINGHAM, 23 Thornycroft Street, Christchurch, a grey composition Rev-Robe suit-case with white stripes, about 30 in. by 24 in. (when front detached case may be hung and clothing suspended from hangers), containing a rose-coloured house coat; a navyblue rain coat; a navy-blue woollen frock with box pleats ; a black woollen frock; a saxe-blue frock; a duck-egg-blue frock; a black velvet frock; a grey worsted costume skirt with blue stripes ; fourteen handkerchiefs ; and. a white fancy frock collar; total value, £6O. Identifiable.

Mount Cook (Wellington).— 2oth ultimo, from a bedroom in the Waimarie Obstetrical Hospital, 128 Abel Smith Street, the property of CATHERINE AMELIA WILLIAMS, Ferry Road, Day’s Bay, a dark navy-blue calf-leather handbag, 9 in. by 8 in., lined with grey suede, short strap over top, flat silver clip-fastener, containing a cheque-book on the National Bank of New Zealand, Te Aro, containing forms Nos. Q. 43924-944; £5 155.; two ration-books, one No. N. 26121 ; two silver old ear-rings for pierced ears, size of a threepenny piece; and a black lever-filling Onoto foyntainpen, gold nib ; total value, £9. Identifiable.

Waikaki. Between the Bth February last and 30th March, from the dwelling of BENJAMIN GEORGE RUTHERFORD, farmer, McDonald Downs, Hawarden, a pair of black field-glasses, probably French make, “ B. G. Rutherford ” and “ McDonald Downs ” or “ Hawarden ” engraved on front, in leather case with spring catch and shoulder-strap; value, £3O. Identifiable. The offence may have been committed by Charles Henry Irvine Birkett, alias Jack George Walker, referred to in Police Gazette, 1945, page 142, and Photographs, 1938, page 7. In February last he stayed on the farm for about a week, and one day during the absence of complainant and his wife he was seen by an employee using the telephone and walking about the house. Christchurch. —Between the 2nd and 6th February last, from a motor-truck in the garage of Blackwell Motors, Ltd., Durham Street, the property of ERIC BIDDLE, 9 Alpha Avenue, Bryndwr, a five-valve short-wave mantel model Courtenay radio, dark-brown walnut cabinet about 17 in. by 8 in. by 10 in., four control-knobs, stock No. C. 1463 in ink-pencil on chassis at back ; and a black stovette which consists of an element in metal frame, about 12 in. by 12 in., on four legs about 3 in. high, fitted with heating plug ; total value, £24 10s. Identifiable.

Dunedin. —Between the 24th and 26th March last, from the paint-room of the OTAGO CHAIR CO., 419 Cumberland Street, an aluminium Aerograph spray-gun, “ T.C.” type with pistol grip and trigger, pint container attached; value, £l2 10s. Identifiable.

Dunedin. — Between the 29th March last and Bth ultimo, from the dwelling of LORNA ELLEN SHIEL, 67 Earl’s Road, St. Clair, a Voigtlander folding camera, f. 6-3 lens, 2J in. by 3 j in., Compur shutter, in dark-brown leather case ; a pair of Horstator beard clippers, German make, round screw on top ; a pair of gentlemen’s dark-tan leather gloves, size 7, dome-fasteners, yellow fleecy lining; two medical books ; three bottles of whisky, Ainsley’s, Teacher’s, and Black and White brands; a bottle of rum ; a bottle of Gilbey’s gin ; a bottle of Hennessy’s Three Star brandy ; six 1 lb. tins of Canadian salmon ; about five tins of oysters ; twelve tins of baked beans, K brand ; twenty-four tins of fruit; two tins of soup ; and two tins of Canadian sardines ; total value, £25 12s. Portion identifiable.

Dunedin. —On the 14th or 15th ultimo, the warehouse of J. LINDSAY AND CO., Vogel Street, was broken into and the following stolen : Eight quart bottles of King George IV whisky ; a quart bottle of Gilbey’s creme-de-menthe ; about one thousand six hundred Capstan cigarettes, cork-tipped and plain; a 1 lb. carton of Greys cigarette tobacco and fifty-two 2 oz. packets of Tasman Dark tobacco; total value, £25 15s. Not identifiable.

Dunedin. 29th ultimo, '•from the shop of FRANK WILLIAM LAMBERT, 22 Beach Street, St. Clair, about £BO in money made up of £5 and £1 notes; a cheque for £6 Bs. 9d., No. E. 76918, drawn on the National Bank of New Zealand, Dunedin, by J. A. Sim in favour of .Mrs. A. M. Smith, and dated 24/4/45 ; a cheque for £2, No. 050676, drawn on the Bank of New South Wales, Dunedin, by D. S. Chisholm in favour of complainant, and dated 28/4/45; and a cheque for £2 6s. Bd., No. 863405, drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Dunedin, by R. J. Fairweather, in favour of N. Brown, and dated 27/4/45 ; total value, about£9l ss. 5d Cheques identifiable.

Gore. — l9th or 20th February last, from the cab of an excavator in the yard of Johnston and Sons, Irwell Street, the property of WILLIAM WALTER KNOWLES, a wooden box, 18 in. by 10 in. by 12 in., handle on top, containing a set

* (eight) of S.A.E. ring spanners, the largest of which is 1 in. ; h a set (five) of Whitworth ring spanners, the largest of which is 1| in.; eighteen box spanners of various sizes, largest in.,

with two handles and an extension; two Ball and Pain J hammers ; a piston-ring expander ; two sets of feeler-gauges ; about thirty-six double-ended spanners of various sizes; some cold chisels; and a quantity of mechanic’s tools; total value, £2O. Identifiable.

Invercargill. —9th or 10th instant, from the service-station of HAROLD GODFREY WALLIS, Main Street, Gore, two tires (recovered); a32by 6 Firestone tire which had been recapped, serial No. A.F. 155405; , and a 37 by 600 Dunlop tire with diamond pattern'tread ; total value, £46. Identifiable. At 6.30 a.m. on 10th instant it was discovered that complainant’s service-station was on fire and when the fire was extinguished an examination revealed that the tires had been stolen. Later the same day the recovered tires were found by the river-bank about half a mile from the service-station.
