Marshal, ago about fifty, height about 5 ft. 7| in., probably native of New Zealand, thin build, sallow complexion, clean shaven; wearing a fawn overcoat. He obtained £3 10s. in money from Joseph -^photographer, s Devon Street, by means of a valueless cheCftre for £5, No. 69144, drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Nelson, in favour of E. Bruce, and signed “ A. Marshal,” which he tendered in payment of twelve reproductions of a photograph of a naval trainee on H.M.N.Z.S. “ Philomel,” which he requested were to be forwarded to a fictitious address in Waitara. He is probably identical with William George Thomas, referred to in Police Gazette, 1942, page 508, and Photographs, 1933, page 58, and following paragraph. No warrant

Stratford. — 20th ultimo, for false pretences, A. Marsha!, age about fifty, height about 5 ft. 1\ ins., fresh complexion, medium build, dressed in a navy-blue suit, white silk scarf with fringe, and felt hat; had the appearance of a farmer. He obtained £4 14s. in money from Ellen Elizabeth Aitken, assistant in the shop of George Alfred Garter, baker, Broadway, by means of a valueless cheque for £5, No. 80149, drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Nelson, in favour of E. Bruce and signed “A. Marshal,” which he tendered in payment of cake, value ss. 6d., which he stated he would call for later. Graham (name probably fictitious), age about forty, height about 5 ft. 9 in., native of New Zealand, medium build, .-jj/Whrk complexion and hair; neatly dressed in a dark suit. 1/ He obtained £2O cash from Robert McMullian, licensee, fr Regent Hotel, Manners Street, by means of a valueless cheque for that amount, drawn on the Bank of Australasia, Tlmaru, in favour of 11 cash,” signed “C. W. Graham,” \ar and dated 18/5/42. He stayed at the hotel on the night of the 16th-17th ultimo, and he informed complainant that he was a publican, and that his hotel was “ just out of Timaru.” Offender may be identical with Charles William Grimmond Home, referred to in Police Gazette, 1942, page 507, and following paragraph. No warrant.

Greymoutii. —23rd April last, for false pretences, Chas. W. Home, age about thirty-nine, height about 5 ft. 10 in., medium build, dark complexion ; well dressed in a dark suit (no hat). He obtained £6 10s. cash from Alva Howell, clerk, Albion Hotel,'Mawhera Quay, by means of a valueless cheque for £lO, No. A. 661599, drawn on the Bank of Australasia, Timaru, in favour of “ cash ” and signed “ Chas. W. Home,” which he tendered in payment of his accommodation to the 28th April last, but he did not stay at the hotel. He also stated that he was a publican at Pukaki. Nelson. For escaping from Ngawhatu Mental Hospital on the 23rd ultimo, Janet Isabel Wilson, age sixty-five, height 5 ft. 6 in., native of New Zealand, stout build, ruddy complexion; wearing a blue floral dress, hand-knitted white silk jumper, and black stockings.

Dunedin. 22nd December last, on warrant for theft of a cheque for £IOO, the property of Thomas Pearson, farmer, Glenledi, near Milton— (1) Robert Emmetf BurrQwes, referred to in Police Gazette, 1942, page 372, and Photographs, 1937, page 32. (2) Stanley Hammond, referred to in Police Gazette, 1942, page 372. He sometimes has a small moustache; speaks quickly; smart appearance. They induced complainant to invest £IOO in a syndicate which they purported was being formed for promoting a company to refine used motor oil. The cheque was paid into Hammond’s account in the Union Bank of Australia, Dunedin, on the 24th December last.
