Auckland.— 9th October, 1940, that he may be located and interviewed regarding alleged false pretences, James Meikle, age about sixty-two, height about 6 ft. 1 in., rabbiter and labourer, slight build, grey hair, who may be identical with Alexander Meikle, referred to in Police Gazette, 1919, page 68, and with James Alexander Meikle, referred to in Police Gazette, 1940, page 291. On or about above date a cheque, No. 283794, for £5, drawn on the Bank of. New South Wales, Matiere, in favour of J. Meikle, and signed “ James Meikle,” was tendered at the Farmers’ Trading Co., Hobson Street, in payment of goods for that amount. The cheque was valueless, and inquiries have revealed that a man named James Meikle had an account at the bank referred to. The writing on the cheque is similar to that of James Alexander Meikle referred to above.

Auckland.— For escaping from Avondale Mental Hospital on the 14th ultimo, Oswald Gordon Jones, age twenty-eight, height 5 ft. 7 in., native of New Zealand, medium build, fair complexion, dark hair, blue eyes, scar on left, hand, has thin moustache; dressed in a grey tweed suit of herringbone pattern and blue shirt. . Wearing battledress. In company with Leonard Gordon Andrews, referred to in Police Gazette, 1942, page 214, who has been arrested, ho booked in at the hotel referred to, but did not occupy the room. Wanganui.— 6th ultimo, for false pretences, T. C. Bell (name probably fictitious), age about, thirty-seven, height about 5 ft. 7 in., native of New Zealand," medium build, fresh complexion, brown hair, blue eyes; wearing a blue suit or sports; coat and trousers. He obtained a case of wine, value £2 16s. and £2 14s. cash from Harry Lawrence, wine merchant, 90 Victoria Avenue, by means of a valueless cheque for £5 10s., drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Wanganui, in favour of “ Cash,” signed “ T. C. Bell,” and dated 6/3/42. Earlier the same day he obtained two cheque-forms from an assistant in Chainey Bros cycle shop, one of which he filled in for £l2 10s. in payment of a bicycle which he ordered. The photograph of Percival Richard Williams, referred to in Police Gazette, 1942, page 289, and Photographs, 1940, page 76, has . been identified as that of offender. No warrant. Masterton. — 13th ultimo, on warrant for false pretences, F. Murch (name probably fictitious), age about thirty-seven, height about 5 ft. 7J in., medium build, fair complexion, blue or grey eyes ; well dressed in a grey overcoat, ey suit, and felt hat. He obtained £2 9s. 6d. in money from Percival Russell, second-hand dealer, Queen Street, by means of a valueless cheque for £7, No. 670297, drawn on the Bank of New South Wales, Carterton, in favour of “ Cash,” and signed “ F. Murch,” which he tendered in payment of a bed and mattress, value £4 10s., which he stated would be called for later. Earlier the same day he also obtained 10s. cash from Graham Gordon Mayger, saddler, High Street, ' Carterton, by means of a valueless cheque for £6 10s., No. 670296, drawn on the Bank of New South Wales, Carterton, in favour of G. Mayger, and signed “ F. Murch,” which he tendered in payment of harness, value £6, but did not take possession of it. Both cheque-forms referred to above were obtained from Mr. Mayger, who has identified the photograph of Percival Richard Williams, referred to in preceding paragraph, and Photographs, 1940, page 76, as that of the man to whom he gave the cheque-forms. No warrant was issued regarding this latter offence. Z%/
