Auckland. —l7th August last, from a motor-car in Grey’s Avenue, the property of ALFRED EDMUND CHAMBERLAIN,' Waverley, a blue fibrecane suitcase; a brown fibrecane suitcase ; a large navy-blue serge costume ; two large hand-knitted woollen cardigans— green and one fawn ; a large wine-coloured hand-made woollen dress, three small gold-coloured buttons on each side of neck, top of dress lined with white silk ; a round gold brooch with butterfly in centre; a pair of brown tweed Kaiapoi trousers, size 7 ; a large brown rug with green checks ; a fawn rug with lighterfawn checks ; a ladies’ umbrella ; a set of maroon-coloured pyjamas, size 7 ; a cream-coloured nightdress ; a pair of ladies’ black shoes with low heels, two straps on front ; a pair of ladies’ brown rubber boots, size 6, lined with flannel material with zip-fastener in front; a ladies’ O.S. blue silk dressing-gown ; a parcel of nine skeins rose fingering khaki wool; and other articles of underclothing ; total value, £l6 10s. Auckland. — During the night of 25th July last, the shop of SMITH AND BROWN, LTD., Symoruls Street, was broken into and the following stolen : £5 3s. lOd. in money ; £1 10s.' in 2d. stamps ; and a ladies’ , gold wristlet watch about size of a shilling, octagon-shaped front, round back, “ 8.R.” on back case, repair No. 14939 and “ A.M.” scratched on inside back case; total value, £ll Lis. lOd. Auckland. 2nd ultimo, from the shop of JOHN FORREST MACREADY, jeweller, Safe Deposit Buildings, High Street, a gentlemen’s rolled-gold Buren wristlet watch, oblong with slight curve, gold-filled front, steel back, luminous numerals, black wrist-strap; value, £5 10s. Identifiable. Suspicion is attached to a Man (name unknown), age about twenty-two, height about 5 ft. 11 in., strong build, darkcomplexion, black hair; wearing a blue sac coat and white singlet (no shirt or hat.) He called at the shop and asked to be shown some watches, but he did not make a. purchase, and. after he had left it was discovered that the watch described had been stolen.

Auckland. On the 9th ultimo, the dwelling of PHGEBE ELLEN HOWARD, 3 Wellgath Street, was broken into and the following stolen : A black morocco leather handbag, 10 in. by 8 in., silver clip-fastener, no handle, containing some receipts in complainant’s name and some photographs ; and a gentlemen’s gold hunting Swiss watch, Roman numerals, glass missing, winder and back case hinge broken ; total value, £5 ss. Auckland. —Between the 16th and 24th July last, from a room in the Wynyard Private Hotel, the property of WINIFRED LILIAN COWLEY, proprietress, a ladies’ old creamcoloured hand-tatted scarf, fine thread; a ladies’ white crocheted collar, medallion pattern ; a piece of hand-crocheted lace for outside of square supper-cloth, about 36 in. long, scalloped edges ; and a ladies’ white cotton smock, short sleeves, buttoned down front, “ Wynyard ” in ink on neckband ; total value, £7 18s. Identifiable. Suspicion is attached to Gladys Shaw, age about twenty, height about 5 ft. 5 in., housemaid and waitress, medium build, pale complexion, fuzzy black hair, large brown eyes, appears to have dark blood in her, wears glasses ; dressed in a brownishgreen coat. She was employed at the hotel between the dates mentioned, and occupied a room where the lace was kept, and after she left it was discovered that the property described had been stolen. . . . . Pafakura. —During February or March last, from Ngaruawahia Military Camp, the property of the NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT (Army Department), two pairs of prismatic binoculars, mark 11, “ Ross ” or “ Watson,” makers, stamped near eyepiece, Nos. 28198 and 28711 respectively, black metal frames with arrow stamped on them, contained in two brown leather cases with arrows on them ; total value, £lB 14s. Identifiable.

Matamata. —JESSlE IRVING’S shop broken into (see Police Gazette, 1940, page 246): Leslie Pearce, referred to in Police Gazette, 1938, page 812, and Photographs, 1926, page 91, has been interviewed, and he is not the offender. Tokaanu. —11th or 12th ultimo, from the shop of MORAR CHHIBA, £9O in notes; and £l9 in silver. Suspicion is attached to Thomas Joseph Fenton, referred to in Police Gazette, 1936, page 466, and Photographs, 1930, page 79. On; the evening of the 11th ultimo he was one'of several men who were with complainant in a room at the rear of the shop and later he left alone, and it is believed that he then entered the shop and stole the money from the safe which was unlocked. He has been interviewed, but no evidence resulted.

— Between the 10th and 12th July last, from a paddock at Turakina, the property of WILLIAM GLASGOW, a dark-blue 7-year-old dehorned cow, right back and front teats defective ; a light-red big cow without horns ; a darkfawn jersey, second calver, straight-out horns; a yellowish dehorned cow about six years old; a blackish-brown jersey cow, second calver, small straight-out horns: a steel-grey jersey cow, second calver, small horns; agrey dehorned 6-year-old jersey cow. They may.be branded “N. B.” and ear-marked with a notch out of the top of each ear about the centre, and a notch out of the tip of each left ear; total value, £B4. Identifiable.

Greymouth. Between midnight on the 26th ultimo and 1 a.m. on the 27th ultimo, the shop of JOHN TENNENT, 28 Mawhera Quay, was broken into and the following stolen : Thirty-five gentlemen’s 9 ct. gold signet, including two heart-shaped with fiat set rubies, one shield-shaped with flat set ruby, two with band set with oval bloodstones, one with oblong black onyx, with gold “M” riveted through it, two square heavy with stepped shoulders, one square with filigree edge, two horseshoe, and the remainder square, oval, hexagonal, heart, and shield shapes. (All will probably be scratched with private mark, possibly as follows: 81, E2, W3,A4, T 5, 06, H 7, FB, U 9, L 0). Ladies’ Wristlet Watches-A 9 ct. gold Omega with round case and black corded wristlet; a Ralco with round case and dial ; a 9 ct. gold with Milanese gold bracelet; a gold-filled with one of the following numbers, 9589298, 9397413, 9592085, or 9679103; and three gold cased ; total value, £255 15s. Gore. — ultimo, from a room in Main Street, the property of LESLIE JOSEPH SEQUE, 9 Devon Street, a gentlemen’s fawn camel-hair double-breasted overcoat half lined with brown material, Thomson and Beattie ”on tag an air-force blue felt hat, size 7, “ L.S.” and “ Farry Brothers, Gore ” on inside band; and a wine-coloured scarf with white squares, slight darn in one end ; total value, £lO 18s. Waikaia. —23rd or 24th March last, the property of the NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT (Army Department), a •303 calibre Short Magazine Lee Enfield rifle, No. S. 590/10, barrel No. 345, district No. 6088, “ N.Z.” on butt; value about £5. Identifiable. Corporal H. E. Chave was lost in the bush at Piano Flat, and when found it was discovered that he had lost the rifle.

Invercargill. Between 1934 and 1940, the property of EWAN JOHN McLAUCHLAN, 86 Clyde Street, a -303 calibre 1914 pattern Enfield rifle, No. 4257, body and barrel No. Q.B. 546, bolt No. 8940-A ; value about £4. Identifiable.
