PERSONS WANTED.

Auckland. —sth instant, for theft of £IOO, the of Ralph Hector Hawken, a farmer of Whangarei(l) Man. (name unknown), age about thirty, height 5 ft. 7J in., slight build, fresh complexion, dark-brown hair; well dressed ink a blue suit and black felt hat. He may be identical with k George Johns, referred to in Police Gazette, 1939, page 433,?: wliose 'correct name is believed to be George Lloyd Jones. v (2) Norman Fellows, alias George Marr (both names probably fictitious), age about twenty-four, height about 5 ft. 2 in., good build, fresh complexion, dark hair, round face, pointed nose ; well dressed in a light-brown suit, brown felt hat, and . light-coloured overcoat ; represents himself to be a jockey. (3) Man (name unknown), age about forty-five, height about / 5 ft. 11 in., slight build, sallow complexion, dark hair, pointed nose ; well dressed in a light-grey suit, and felt hat, and ■*; wears dark-rimmed spectacles ; slightly stooped. He may x be identical with George Robert Lincon Longton, alias George > r Barrett, who has been interviewed by the Auckland police, ; but no evidence resulted. Longton is described as age I twenty-six, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, fair hair, blue weak eyes, protruding ears, sharp pointed nose, one gold ( upper front tooth; well dressed in a blue serge doublebreasted suit and brown felt hat; suffers from asthma. William Francis Keenan, referred to in Police Gazette, 1932, page 511, and Photographs, page 99, was also interviewed

by the Auckland police, but no evidence resulted. Longton and Keenan had been associating with the two first described men, and they both left Auckland on the Bth instant in a dark-brown Ford V 8 coupe motor-car, registration No. 113,738, It is known that this vehicle was in the possession of Longton. While the Paeroa races were being held on the 29th ultimo, complainant was approached by the first man described above who represented that i he had a horse “set” to win certain races, and that he had “ squared ” the jockeys. A few days later at Paeroa this man, accompanied by the accused Norman Fellows, alias George Marr, whom he introduced as “ the jockey,” again met the complainant and arranged with him to meet them in Auckland on the 4th. Hawken did so, and accompanied them to the Hotel Auckland where they were met by the third described man who was represented to be a bookmaker. He refused to pay the accused £360 which they pretended to have won at Paeroa, £l2O of which was represented to be complainant’s winnings for a £5 bet invested by him, through the man first described, on a horse at the second day’s races at Paeroa, unless they were prepared to put up a similar amount to indicate that they would have paid out had they lost. They persuaded complainant to put up £IOO, and the first and second described men accompanied him to Whangarei where he procured £IOO and returned to Auckland and gave the money to the first described man who disappeared ostensibly to collect the winnings from the bookmaker. The second described man subsequently eluded complainant in the street, and none of them has been seen since. Longton, alias Barrett, is believed to have been associating with John Dailey, who is referred to in Police Gazette, 1939, page 625, and Photographs, page 78. It is desired that they be located and interviewed. They are all believed to be Australian confidence men. No warrants.

Auckland. — 2nd instant, on warrant for a breach of his probation (Offenders Probation Act, 1920), James Drummond McKenzie, referred to in Police Gazette, 1938, page 694, and Photographs, 1937, page 42. He has failed to report to a Probation Officer. The original charge reads: On the 22nd July, 1938, at Auckland, did steal a pair of shoes, a missionary box, and £3 7s. in money, of a total value of £4 16s. 6d., the property of Arthur G. Arnold.”

Coromandel. 3oth ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for fourteen days in default of paying £3 ss. fine and costs for taking oysters without a license, Arthur McQuoid, age thirty-six, height 5 ft. 11 in., motordriver, native of New Zealand, strong build, fresh complexion, dark-brown hair, blue eyes.

Te Aroha. —29th ultimo, on two warrants of commitment to Hamilton Prison for four days on each in default of paying £2 12s. fines and costs for failing to have a warrant of fitness and a rear-vision mirror for his motor-car, Morris William Ware, age about twenty-four, height about 5 ft. 7 in., labourer, stout build, fair complexion and hair, blue eyes ; quiet manner.

Te Awamutu. 7th ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Te Awamutu Prison for three days in default of paying £2 fine for assault, Tapaiai Erueti, alias Thomas Edwards, referred to in Police Gazette, 1939, page 723.

Gisborne. — Cyril Henry Charles Nichols, theft (see Police Gazette, 1939, page 598) : He is in possession of a grey or fawn Austin 12 h.p. or 16 h.p. touring motor-car, registration No. 151,786, registered in the name Cyril Nicoll, Haumoana, Hawke’s Bay. He is said to be still canvassing for orders for aluminium steam cookers, and usually carries one in his car to display to prospective purchasers. Browning (name probably fictitious), age about forty-three, height 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, thin face ; well dressed in a darkblue suit with thin white stripes, grey felt hat, and black shoes. Accused obtained £3 19s. 6d. in money from Joseph Wiltshire Simpson, clerk, New Central Hotel, by means of a valueless cheque, No. 3A085087, drawn on the Union Bank of Australia, New Plymouth, payable to T. Browning or Bearer,” signed A. J. Sutcliffe Sec.,” and A. Johnstone, Treasurer,’ and dated 7th October, 1939. He may be identical with T. Gross and Thomas Alfred Gross, referred to in Police Gazette, 1939, pages 789 and 808. There are other charges pending. No warrant.

Wellington. 2nd August last, on warrant to apprehend for failing to maintain his wife, Josephine Mary Ellen Cowley, and. two children, Douglas Albert Cowley, age thirty-four, height about 5 ft. 8 in., carpenter and cabinetmaker, native of New Zealand, strong build, sallow complexion, dark hair, grey eyes ; quiet manner.

Wellington. Frederick Ranson, default of fine and costs, left for Australia by the ship “ Maunganui ” on the 19th ultimo. His full name is Frederick George Ranson, and he is a native of England, age thirty-three. (See Police Gazette, 1939, page 789.)
