Street, by means of a valueless cheque for that amount on the Bank of New Zealand, Auckland, No. T. 845584, payable to J. J. Boyce, Ltd., or Bearer, and signed W. G. King. The cheque is from the cheque book of William George Mclsaac, referred to above, and he is to be interviewed regarding this offence and also another similar offence in the commission of which Mclsaac used his correct name. Accused obtained £2 10s. from Helen Hughes, boardinghouse-keeper, Currie Street, by means of a valueless check which he tendered in payment of £1 10s. for board, dated 29th September, 1939, and drawn on the Union Bank of Australia, Ltd., New Plymouth, in favour of T. Gross, for the sum of £4, and signed “ Fitzroy Lodge, No. 36, R.A.0.8., W. J. Bailey, Secretary, and A. W. Messenger, Trustee.” The cheque was from the chequebook of the Fitzroy Lodge, R.A.0.8., which, was stolen from the Fitzroy Hall between the 27th ultimo and the 2nd instant, and which contained twenty-three cheque-forms, No. 3 A. 085058 to 3 A. 085080, all stamped in purple copyingink “ Fitzroy Lodge, No. 36, R.A.0.8.” He may be in possession of a small brown leather attache-case, size 18 in., “ Warranted Bullock Hide ” over “18 ” under handle. He may be identical with Thomas Alfred Gross, a barman, recently of Motueka. There are other charges pending. (See following paragraph.) j J

Accused obtained a suit of clothes, value £8 Bs., and 10s. 6d. cash from Thomas Brown Louisson, assistant in the shop of G. F. Scoltock, Hardy Street, by means of a valueless cheque on the Union Bank of Australia, Motueka, in favour of G. F. Scoltock, and signed J. G. Best. He is said to have been known as Thomas Alfred Gross, to have stayed at the Belgrove Hotel from the Bth ultimo to the 13th, where he obtained a loan from the licensee with whom he left the suit above referred to as security. He is believed to have issued further valueless cheques at Lyttelton, Carterton, and Napier. (See preceding paragraph.) j y

(Hawera. —26th ultimo, on warrant for theft of £5 (including a 10s. note, No. 7Z554631, which has been recovered), the property of Harold Arthur Bennett, billiard-saloon proprietor, High Street, Francis Bernard Royce Crozier, referred to in Police Gazette, 1939, page 20. He is usually dressed in a blue serge suit and greenish hat. The money was stolen from a cupboard in the billiard-room. About 2.30 a.m. on the date of the offence Charles Ronald Cochrane, who sleeps on the premises, was awakened by a man tampering with the cupboard, and it is presumed that accused concealed himself in the lavatory prior to the closing of the billiardroom. C. Brady. The cheque is from the cheque-book of O. W. If. McGrath, Greymouth, which was stolen from him and contained cheques No. 605577-605590. There are (fisher charges pending.

The explosion was heard about 2.35 a.m. on the 24th by people living in the vicinity, but as nothing was stolen it is considered that the offenders became frightened and decamped. Any information that may assist in discovering the offenders is to be communicated to the Inspector of Police, Napier.
