Gillan (name probably fictitious), age about fifty, height 5 ft. 6 in., medium build, sallow complexion, brown hair, heavy moustache; dressed in a brown suit and grey felt hat. Accused obtained £4 from Ernest Alexander Butt, journalist, 17 East Street, by means of a valueless cheque for £5, No. A. 470192, drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Matamata, in favour of Wilson and Horton, Ltd., signed J. E. Gillan, and dated 21st February, 1939. He tendered the cheque in payment for six months’ subscription for the “ Weekly News,” which he asked to be addressed “J. E. Gillan, Cookhouse, P.W.D., Mamakau.” The cheque is from the cheque-book of Joseph Townley, Tirau. He may be identical with Charles Mozart Spinley, referred to in Police Gazette, 1939, page 496, and Photographs, 1930, page 8, and with Jack Garsen, alias Murray, alias A. E. Te Awamutu.— 3oth ultimo, on warrant for breaking and entering the shop of William George Milgate, butcher, Pirongia, and stealing £39 in money, Wiremu Porotene, alias William Broughton, age twenty-five, height 5 ft. 8-1- in., labourer, native of New Zealand, good build, copper complexion, black hair, brown eyes, flat nose, boil-scars on forearms; dressed in black football shorts, jersey, brownish-grey overcoat, brown shoes, and black football stockings with red tops (no hat); a good footballer, and a keen pool player ; a halfcaste Maori. He is usually dressed in a navy-blue suit, light-grey tweed overcoat, dark felt hat, and black shoes; has a slight impediment in his speech which is more pronounced when he is under the influence of liquor; he has a plausible manner, and is of smart appearance. Accused obtained £ls in money from James William Souter, licensee, Central Hotel, Eltham, by means of a valueless cheque for that amount, drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Manaia, payable to cash, signed H. Taylor, and dated 3rd June, 1939. He was in possession of a cheque-book. It is considered that he may endeavour to leave this Dominion. f J New Plymouth. — April last, on warrant for false pretences, M. Hawkins (name probably fictitious), age about thirty-five, height about 5 ft. 9 in., labourer, strbng build, dark tanned complexion, black hair; dressraPm a dark suit and felt hat. Accused obtained £7 2s. 6-from Noel Templeton Tailby, licensee, Imperial Hotel, means of a valueless cheque for £lB Bs. drawn on the Bank of Australasia, Masterton, payable to M. Hawkins, sighed H. 11. James, and dated 18/4/39. On the 18th AppTne arranged to stay at the Imperial Hotel for a few, days and tendered the cheque for payment in advance fqrdiis board, £3 ss. 6d. He was given £7 2s. 6d., and £8 wasplaced in the safe for him. He did not occupy the room allotted to him and he did not take possession of the £8 referred to. The cheque was from the cheque-book of Michael/Collins, West Taratahi, near Masterton, and accused /may be identical with J. Ward, alias J. Napier. — lst ultimo, on warrant for theft of a bootsewing machine, value £B, the property of Albert Keith Sykes, boot-repairer, Bridge Street, Port Ahuriri, Harold George Reid, alias Harry Walter Reid, referred to in Police Gazette, 1939, page 178, and Photographs, 1928, page 63. He is usually dressed in a navy-blue suit. On the 9th May last accused hired the machine, and on the Ist instant he gave to Mcßeath, Prisk, and Co., leather merchants, Napier, a bill of sale over this machine as security for a debt of £2O which he owed to that firm. On or about the 2nd March last, on warrant for theft of £5 12s. 9d., the property of the New Zealand Government (Land and Income Tax Department), Gerald William Hynes, age 24, height about 5 ft. 3 in., clerk, native of New Zealand, medium build, sallow complexion, wavy dark hair, hazel eyes; usually dressed in a grey suit, tweed overcoat of herring-bone pattern, seldom wears a hat; his eyes twitch, and he is believed to suffer from an injury to one knee. While employed as a clerk in the District Treasury Office, Christchurch, he received £5 12s. 9d. from Herbert Frederick Meynell, being moneys payable as tax on income for the year ended 31st March, 1938, and failed to account for it to the Land and Income Tax Department.
