Accused was employed as a collector for the complainant firm and fraudulently failed to account for the amount mentioned.

Murray (name probably fictitious), age about fifty-four, height about 5 ft. 7 in., medium build, fresh complexion, brown eyes; cast in one eye ; round shoulders ; dressed in a grey suit and felt hat. Accused obtained from Stewart Bros., storekeepers, Tauranga, clothing, value £1 25., and £5 Bs. cash by means of a valueless cheque for £6 10s. on the Union Bank of Australia, Opotiki, dated 4th May, 1939, payable to Cochrane Lodge, signed F. Murray. The photograph of Charles Mozart Spinley, referred to in Police Gazette, 1939, page 443, and Photographs, 1930, page 8, has been identified as that of accused. Palmerston North.— -29th March last, on warrant for false pretences, John Guthbertson, age about thirty, height 5 ft. 10 in., barman, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, dark hair; dressed in a green suit with pin stripes, green felt hat and black shoes; slow speech. Accused obtained £l5O from George Huia Bell and £l5O from Ernest John Marshall by falsely representing that a Studebaker roadster motor-car in his possession was his own property and free from debt, whereas in fact he merely held it under a hire-purchase agreement with the Tourist Motor Co., Hastings, and still owed that firm £260 18s. 3d. on it. He left this Dominion for Australia in April last. He may be identical with Elwood CuthbertSOn, referred to in Police Gazette, 1938, page 196, and Photographs, 1933, page 48. /c/'?3 c

Wellington. 24th February last, on warrant for theft of a suit-case and contents, value £8 10s., the property of Edith Florence Sears, 17 Hawkestone Street, Frederick Butler, age thirty-nine, height 5 ft. 4|- in., cook and baker, native of England, medium build, fresh complexion, brown hair, long nose; scar on tip of nose and on left side of forehead. Accused, who travelled by a Railways Department bus from Wanganui on the 24th February last, claimed, at Wellington, the suit-case and contents which had been consigned as freight from Wanganui. In March last he left this Dominion for Australia. Description of stolen property : A brown fibre suit-case, about 30 in. by 14 in., “ Mrs. H. Barnes, Blackheath, Springvale,” pencilled inside lid; a green cardigan; a pair of pale blue lock-knit pyjamas; a pink satin and lace brassiere ; a blue lock-knit step-in; a white linen tea-towel; a pink face-flannel; a white poplin shirt, 15| in. collar ; a blue-striped shirt, 15J in. collar; two pairs of gentlemen’s cream coloured short underpants; a gentlemen’s sleeveless interlock singlet; five pairs of woollen socks; a dozen gentlemen’s handkerchiefs; six ladies’ handkerchiefs — white and one white with mauve and blue border.
