Queen Street Wharf (Auckland). 24th March, 1937, for false pretences, Mrs. Doctor Harris (name probably fictitious), age about forty-seven, height about 5 ft. 8 in., medium build, sallow complexion, gaunt features; well spoken ; smart appearance. Accused obtained the property described below from David Silk, jeweller, Queen Street, by falsely representing herself to be Mrs. Doctor Harris of Helensville : Six Sterling silver teaspoons, in a black-coloured plush-lined case about 6 in. by 5 in. ; and six Sterling silver pastry forks, Hall marked, contained in plush-lined case : total value, £6 15s. Not identifiable. She may be identical with Miss J. English, referred to in Police Gazette, 1937, page 369, and Mrs. C. Harris, referred to in Police Gazette, 1938, page 151. No warrant. Accused obtained the following described articles from Smith and Caughey, Ltd., Queen Street, by falsely representing that she was a daughter of Mr. J. W. English, licensee, The Duke of Marlborough Hotel, Russell : A one-piece petrol-coloured frock with stitched flared skirt, XS.SW size; and a fancy knitted blue woollen cardigan, SW. size: total value, £4 Is. Not identifiable. She may be identical with a woman of the same name referred to in Police Gazette, 1937, page 369, and Mrs. C. Harris, referred to in Police Gazette, 1938, page 151. No warrant. Auckland.— l7th January last, on warrant for obstructing the police and for theft of a New Zealand dress ensign (recovered), value, 125., the property of the Union Steam Ship Co., Ltd., Owen Byrne, age forty-two, height 5 ft. 2 in., labourer and seaman, native of Ireland, strong build, fair complexion, dark-brown hair, blue eyes, birthmark on right thigh. On the 10th instant he failed to appear at the Magistrate’s Court in answer to a summons. (See Police Gazette, 1937, page 421, and Photographs, 1919, page 52.)

Hamilton.— About Ist ultimo, on warrant for forgery, Henry Leonard Slight, age about forty-seven, height 5 ft. 9 in., labourer and slaughterman, native of New Zealand, medium build, dark complexion, dark hair turning grey; usually dressed in a grey suit and light-grey hat; frequents hotels ; bowed legs. He is charged that “On or about the Ist February, 1938, at Frankton Junction, did forge a certain document, to wit, the endorsement to a cheque for £lO 16s. Bd., drawn on the Union Bank of Australia, Ltd., Auckland, purporting to be signed by A. McDonald, and. did cause Cyril Lansdowne Nicholls to act upon it as if it were genuine.” On the 31st January last Alexander McDonald, slaughterman, Horotiu, gave accused the cheque described above to pay into his account at the Bank of New Zealand, Ngaruawahia, but the latter forged complainant’s signature on the cheque and uttered it to Cyril Lansdowne Nicholls, Licensee, Frankton Hotel. He may be identical with Henry Leonard Slight, referred to in Police Gazette, 1933, page 493.

Rotorua. 3rd December last, that he may be located and warned to report to a Probation Officer, George Stanley Skinner, referred to in Police Gazette, 1937, page 816, and Photographs, 1936, page 65. He is charged as follows : “On or about the 19th March, 1938, at Masterton, did steal £59 3s. 9d. in money, the property of Messrs. Kenner’s Ltd.” He was employed by Kenner’s Ltd., but he disappeared on the 19th instant, after which an inspection of the firm’s books revealed a shortage of the amount referred to above. He stayed with complainant since the 7th ultimo, and about a fortnight ago the latter discovered that the money had been stolen from his cash-box which he kept in a wardrobe. When questioned accused denied the theft, but on the 16th instant after he had left by air for Wellington, it was found that he had left £2O on his bed. Ballantyne and Co., Stafford Street, by falsely representing that it was for Mrs. Grant Munroe, Hakataramea Valley: Peachcoloured Gossard corsets, No. 523, size 35 ; Gossard corsets with underbelt, No. 553, size 36 ; three Celanese petticoats ; two pairs of bloomers; three silk floral frocks (all O.S. or X.O.S. sizes); and a black tailored overcoat, O.S. or X.O.S. size: total value, £l9 9s. Id. Corsets only identifiable. No warrant.

Dunedin. —10th January last, on warrant of commitment to Paparua Prison for four days in default of paying £4 12s. fine and costs for a breach of the Electrical Wiremen’s Registration Act, James F. Andrews, age about forty, height 5 ft. 8 in., confectioner and showman, native of New Zealand, strong build, fresh complexion, fair hair, prominent jaw and cheekbones. He frequents agricultural and pastoral shows, where he sells a confection known as “ Candy floss.”
