PROPERTY STOLEN.

Auckland. —9th June last, from a motor-car in Victoria Street West, the property of the REV. DR. LEONARD BUXTON, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, a 14 in. brown leather attache-case, “ L.T.8.” on outside, containing a black silk soutane; a white lace surplice; two —one black, the other purple; and a gold Pyx similar to and about size of a gentlemen’s hunting pocket watch, “ Given By My Mother, 1919 ”on outside of back case : total value, £l2 15s. Identifiable.

Auckland. —3rd ultimo, from the porch of the Church Army Hall, 66 Richmond Road, the property of FRANK C. PEARCE, a gentlemen’s double-breasted navy-blue leather overcoat with blue and white check silk lining, size 3, Raglan sleeves, storm cuffs, seam at each side, “ Earnest Leaning, Footwear Specialist, Auckland,” on tag at neck, “E. Leaning ” stamped on leather facings ; value, £6. Identifiable. Suspicion is attached to Man (name unknown), age about thirty-three, height about 5 ft. 7 in., medium build, fair complexion neatly dressed in a navy-blue suit and a dark Trilby hat. About the time the offence was committed the suspect, who was under the influence of liquor, called at the church and asked for assistance.

Auckland. — the night of the 24th ultimo, the dwelling of May Taylor, 46 View Road, Mount Eden, was broken into and the following, the property of WILLIAM E. A. CUSHION and others, stolen : A suit (recovered); a gentlemen’s oblong silver Swiss wristlet Novoris watch with luminous hands and dial; a Swan fountain-pen with silver-coloured nib; a navy-blue suit with “ Clare Laurie and Harvey ”on tag at neck of coat; a black pigskin purse; 15s. in money ; a brown leather suit-case, about 14 in. by 12 in. by 5 in., “A. K. Little ” written in ink on inside of lid; a pair of black Cashmere socks; and a gentlemen’s English brown worsted suit with faint red lines, small burn on right side of waistcoat, red acid stain on right leg of trousers: total value, £l9 15s. 6d. Portion identifiable. Suspicion is attached to John Mackav (name probably fictitious), age about thirty-seven, height about 5 ft. 7 in., medium build, sallow complexion, dark hair; wearing fawn overcoat and felt hat. JAMES IGGO GRUT’S watch, &c., stolen (see Police Gazette, 1937, page 199): Howard Lee de Grut, referred to in Police Gazette, 1937, page 456, and Photographs, page 46, who was suspected of having committed the offence, has been interviewed, but no evidence resulted.

Auckland. On the 13th ultimo, the dwelling of KATE MARGARET BULL, 25 Momona Road, was broken into and the following stolen : A gold single bar brooch with opal in band setting in centre, thin gold chain and safety-pin attached; a ladies’ gold dress ring, set with opal in band setting ; a gold neck-chain, about 18 in. long, twisted links; a gentlemen’s silver open-face keyless pocket watch, No. 190702, heavy case, Swiss movement, repair No. B. 24206 AK., small chip off enamel in second-hand dial; a ladies’ silver Rolex wristlet-watch (no band), Arabic numerals, “4” damaged and inked over; a ladies’ silver open-face keyless dress watch, engraved case ; a ladies’ white metal wristletwatch, numerals are in depressions in dial; and a ladies’ gilt wristlet-watch, Arabic numerals. The latter two watches are without bands, and are not in working-order : Total value, £2O. Identifiable.

Auckland. tho 10th and 12th ultimo, the property of RANALD FRANCIS DEWAR, chief officer, s.s. “ Kairanga,” a pair of Husun marine binoculars, “ Henry Hughes and Coy.” stamped on bracket bar, and the words “ The Liverpool ” and “ Husun ” may also be on them, sunshade on front of each glass; value, £4. Identifiable. The following described Youths were seen on the ship near the charter-room from where the binoculars were taken, and they may have stolen them Age about eighteen, height about 5 ft. 3 in., medium build, dark complexion; dressed in khaki-coloured dirty trousers (no hat nor coat). (2) age about eighteen, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, fair hair and complexion; dressed in a navy-blue suit (no hat). (3) age about sixteen.

Auckland. — llth June last, from the smoke-room on the R.M.S. “ Monowai ” between Sydney (Australia) and Auckland (New Zealand), the property of SITA KHUSAL NARAN, 318 Ponsonby Road, a light-brown cabin trunk, 36 in. by 15 in. by 18 in., brass-coloured handles at each end, containing a gold chain about 12 in. long, small links, fastener attached; sixteen Indian wraps of various colours, each 15 ft. long and 3 ft. wide ; three grey check wraps, each 15 ft. long and 3 ft. wide; fifty Indian blouses of various colours, fancy-work around sleeves, neck, and base ; twelve white underskirts with fancy-work at bottoms in coloured cotton ; and a pair of gentlemen’s shoes, size 5 : total value, £35. Identifiable.

Auckland. Between the Ist and sth ultimo, from a cabin on the s.s. “ Monowai ” at Vancouver, Canada, the property of ETHEL MARGARET EMMETT, Lytton Street, North Sydney, Australia, a green winter coat with silver fox fur collar, lined, “ David Jones, Sydney ” on inside ; a. light-green woollen frock; a brown velvet cape, “G. Thorpe, Sydney ”on it; a brown lace evening frock with slip ; a ruby velvet dinner frock with lace sleeves and yoke ; a lobster-pink linen frock, white collar and cuffs; a slub fawn linen frock ; a dark-blue figured marocain tunic ; a rust-coloured shirt-blouse; a yellow shirt-blouse; two white crepe de Chine frocks; a set of pink satin pyjamas; a set of Chinese pyjamas, mixed colours ; a dark-blue crepe de Chine frock ; some bloomers and ladies’ singlets ; two woollen jumpers ; a white fur handbag ; a hot-water bag and cover; and a hair brush with white handle : total value, £6O Is. 6d. Portion identifiable. The property may have been brought to New Zealand.

Auckland. Between the 18th and 22nd ultimo, from a cabin on the m.v. “ Wanganella ” between Sydney (Australia) and Auckland (New Zealand), the property of WILLIAM KELLY, Seymour, Cape Colony, South Africa, four traveller cheques for £lO, each drawn on the Standard Bank of South Africa, Ltd., in favour of “ Self ” or “ Order,” signed “W. Kelly, and endorsed “W. Wilson, London Manager, Adderley Street, Capetown ” stamped on back of each cheque. Identifiable.

Carterton. Between the 29th May and the 14th June last, from a bedroom in the dwelling of J. P. Sage, farmer, Ahiaruhe, the property of CLARA FLYNN, school-teacher, a gold engagement ring, set with a cluster of seven diamonds and one diamond on each side; and a gentlemen’s gold ring with raised thistle embossed on it (both rings were in a blue velvet case) : total value, £2O. Identifiable. Roy Edward Ralph, referred to in Police Gazette, 1935, page 303, and Photographs, 1926, page 32, was employed by Mr. Sage. H(* lived in the same dwelling, and is known to have been in the room from which the rings were stolen. He has been interviewed by the Carterton police, but no evidence resulted.

Identifiable.

Wellington. —2oth ultimo, from a room in Watkins’ Buildings, Cuba Street, tho property of EDWARD JAMES MILES, a pair of Lunuir binoculars, French make, “ 8 X ” stamped on fabric, “ Lunuir ” in diamond on one side, “ Paris ”in diamond on other side; value, £6 ss. Identifiable.
