When arrested he is to be sentenced on the original charge, which reads : On the 11th October, 1934, at Stratford, with intent to defraud, did obtain from Ennis John Withers a pair of trousers, two shirts, two pairs of socks, and two handkerchiefs, value £2 13s. 3d. by certain false pretence, to wit, by falsely representing that he worked in the Telephone Exchange, and had been transferred from Nelson to Stratford”. The coat was stolen from a motor-car and sold to a secondhand dealer.

Between the 31st October and the Bth November last, for theft of a cheque for £5 14s. 10d., the property of Thomas Quinn and Co., Conon Street, Man (name unknown), age about nineteen, height 5 ft. 8 in., labourer, medium build, fresh complexion, fair hair; dressed in a dark-grey suit and khaki shirt (no hat). On the 31st October last the secretary of the above-mentioned firm drew the cheque in favour of D. Tuffery, of Timpany’s, and posted it, but Tuffery did not receive it. On the Bth November it was cashed by the Single Profits Store, Elies Road, by the man described above, who received groceries, value 155., and £4 19s. lOd. change. No warrant.
