Accused obtained £3 from Charles Hamilton Johnston, fruiterer, 4 McDonald Lane, by means of a valueless cheque for £8 10s., which he tendered in payment for a fare to Hamilton by the Checkers Service Cars. Hastings. 27th ultimo, for false pretences, G. E. or J. S. McLeod, age about thirty-three, height 5 ft. 8 in., medium build, fair fresh complexion ; dressed in a grey suit. Accused obtained from Hugh William Charles Baird, draper, by means of a valueless cheque for £22 10s., the following articles, value £6 145., and £4 4s. change : A blue serge suit with faint blue and red stripes, size 4 ; a blue Summit shirt with darker blue and white stripes ; two black shirts with collars attached, branded “ Bairds ” ; a tie ; and an attache-case. Accused met complainant, who was going to Australia, at the People’s Palace, and by means of a confidence trick (“Gold for notes”) deprived him of £23. No warrant.

Wellington. 4th November last, for false pretences, D. McNaughton, age sixty, height 5 ft. 6 in., canvasser, medium build, ruddy complexion, brown hair turning grey, grey eyes, wrinkled face ; neatly dressed in a navy-blue suit and lightgrey felt hat. Accused, who was employed by George Harrison, photographer, 147 Cuba Street, obtained £4 18s. 9d. commission from his employer by falsely representing that he had received three orders for photograph-enlargements.
