Theft.

Dunedin. —22nd December last, on warrant for theft of £769 11s. 6d., the property of the New Zealand Fibre Corporation, Ltd., Ronald Ellis Massey, age about twenty-six, height 5 ft. 4 in., secretary, native of England, medium build, florid complexion, wavy black hair, large blue eyes, long straight nose, natural teeth which are very even and widely spaced, small white hands ; well dressed in light-grey suit, light soft felt hat, and light-brown shoes with rubber soles ; short quick gait, with head and shoulders forward ; supposed to be a 8.A., and stated he had gone through a course of credit instruction in La Salle University, New York, and was entitled to the letters A.C.I.S (Eng.). Accused, who was secretary of the complainant firm, cashed on the 22nd December last a cheque for £769 Us. 6d., the subject of this charge, and two days later he cashed another cheque for £772 19s. 9d. The offices of the firm were closed from the 24th December last to the 11th ultimo, following which accused had leave until the 18th. He failed to return, and it was then discovered that the signatures of the directors had been forged to the cheques which had been cashed. Included in the money paid to accused by the National Bank of New Zealand (where he had the cheques cashed) were twenty £SO notes, the numbers of which are as follows : P. 5535, P. 5541, P. 3981, P 1962, P. 3979, P. 6013, P. 6014, P. 6005, P. 6006, P. 6034, P 5784, P. 6089, P. 6090, P. 6015, P. 6016, P. 6081, P. 6082, P. 3976, P. 5527, P. 5605, P. 3935, P. 5783, P. 5775, P. 5918, P. 5526, 000557, 000731, 000735 ; all National Bank of New Zealand. Mischief. Dunedin. About 8.30 p.m. on the 2nd December last, a motor-car, value £l5O, the property of Harold Hopewell, 377 George Street, was wilfully destroyed by fire at Lookout Point. Suspicion is attached to Two Men (names unknown), of whom descriptions are not available, save that one was aged about forty, and wore a dark coat and hat. Efforts are to be made to trace the offenders.
