Oiiaeawai. —9th instant, on warrant for theft of a gentlemen’s open-face watch, value 12s. 6d., the property of Kenneth McLeod, farmer, Te Ahuahu, Thomas George Ward, age thirtythree, height 5 ft. 6 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, auburn hair going bald, blue prominent eyes, scar on left cheek and nose ; husky voice ; represents himself to be a veterinary surgeon, and guarantees to cure cows with hard quarters ; fond of drink. named accused sold some of the stolen serge to seamen at Auckland. They may endeavour to stow away on a vessel leaving this Dominion, and the police are to be on the alert to effect their arrest.

Accused obtained £4 Is. 4d. and goods, value 2s. Bd., from Winifred Buse, manageress, Driver’s Store, South Road, by means of a valueless cheque for £4 45., No. 8433342. He may be in possession of five other cheque on the Bank of New Zealand, New Plymouth, No. 8433339 to 8433344, which were stolen from Edmond O’Dea, secretary, Ngamotu Domain Committee, with whom accused had been staying. He is also suspected of having on the Ist instant attempted to break and enter the dwelling of Eustace Solomon, South Road, Moturoa, with intent to commit a crime. Hastings. On or about the 16th August last, on warrant for theft of dresses, &c., value £lO 19s. 4d., the property of Henretta Maxwell, Puketitri, Pat Sullivan, age about twentysix, height about 5 ft. 3 in., commercial artist, strong build, dark complexion and hair, grey eyes ; well dressed in a dark suit and grey felt hat or grey cap ; Irish accent. On the 16th June last complainant and her husband quitted “ Sunya ” Boardinghouse, Heretaunga Street, where they had been staying, but left three suit-cases and contents to be called for later. When these were being collected on the 7th instant the discovery was made that the suit-cases had been rifled of a portion of their contents. The suspect stayed at “ Sunya ” Boardinghouse from the Bth August to the 4th ultimo, and whilst there gave the proprietress, Mrs. Carswell, and Doris Edna Hemmingson some articles of clothing, which have since been identified as portion of the stolen property. The following is a description of the articles stolen: A crepe de Chine evening dress (recovered), a floral voile day dress, a sky-blue skirt with elastic waist, a cream jumper with blue bow tie attached and fancy handkerchief, two winceyette pink nightdresses with fancy work on front, a cream singlet with lace insertion, a pair of light-pink Kayser silk bloomers, a pair of dark Kayser silk bloomers, a pair of silk stockings, two pairs of pink cotton stockings (one pair recovered), a pair of grey cotton stockings, a golden-coloured scarf (recovered), a box containing eight fancy handkerchiefs, a pair of rose felt slippers (size 5), a brilliant hat-clip, a gentlemen’s white shirt with silver stripes (size 5), a blue and grey Parisian tie, a pair of gentlemen’s green and grey fancy socks, a clothesbrush with light-coloured back, and a bottle of brilliantine (recovered).
