Accused obtained a hat and a shirt, value £1 lOs., and £3 9s. cash from Wilson and Shaw, storekeepers, by means of a valueless cheque for £4 19s. 6d. The cheque was one of two stolen from the cheque-book of A. S. Howard, farmer, Te Hoe, who, with accused, occupied a room at the Taupiri Hotel on the 29th ultimo. There are other charges pending. Accused forged the signature of F. M. Leek as an endorsement on the back of a cheque for £9, and uttered it to Sydney Reeves Hawken, gentlemen’s outfitter, Victoria Street, from whom he purchased some socks and Apex shirts. The cheque had been lost by Frank Morris Leek.

Accused stayed from the 13th August to the sth ultimo at the Masonic Hotel and obtained board, value £2O, from the licensee, Frederick Colvin, by fraudulently representing that he had a bank account and a motor-car at Hastings. He was accompanied by a woman (age about thirty, height about 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, fair complexion ; dressed in a brown costume ; frail-looking), and after quitting complainant’s hotel they stayed at the Manchester Hotel, Feilding, until the 27th ultimo, when they disappeared without paying for their board, accused in this instance having given the name Edwards. He may be identical with Charles Edward Crews, formerly proprietor of the Napier Dairy Co., who has deserted his wife and children; and, if he is so identical, the woman accompanying him may be Marvel Edna Davies, who at one time was employed in his office.

Thomas Chambers Irving, licensee, Wilson’s Hotel, Reefton, believing the request was from Clarrie McCarthy, who had Irving’s horse “ Tukatama ” at Christchurch, transmitted £SO, which was collected the same day The accused was in Christchurch, and he is suspected.
