Auckland. —Ist instant, on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for four months in default of paying £4O 10s. arrears due on a maintenance order for the support of his wife, Patrick George Pascoe, age thirty-four, height about 5 ft. 8 in., tailor, native of Australia, strong build, dark complexion, black hair, grey eyes, flat nose ; well dressed. Auckland. 24th ultimo, on two warrants of commitment to Auckland Prison for twenty hours and seven days in default of paying £1 fines and costs for wilful damage and assault, James Downey, age sixty-one, height 5 ft. 8| in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, grey hair going bald, grey eyes, scar on top of head and on left forefinger, eagle and snake on right upper arm. Auckland. —3rd instant, on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for seven days in default of paying £2 15s. fine and costs for being found on licensed premises during prohibited hours, Robert Snowden Bush, age twenty-eight, height 5 ft. 11 in., clerk and traveller, native of New Zealand, medium build, dark complexion, dark-brown hair, grey eyes ; usually well dressed ; plausible manner. Auckland. —16th August last, on warrant for false pretences, Gordon Dcugatd Crawford, age twenty-three, height 5 ft. 7 in., chemist, native of New Zealand, slight build, fair complexion and hair; dressed in a light-grey or blue suit and light soft felt hat. Accused obtained £IOO from the New Zealand Petrol Company, Auckland, by falsely representing that a certain preparation of ingredients would make motor-spirit. There are other charges pending* ,

Huntly. 6th instant, on warrant for false pretences, George Ainslee (name probably fictitious), age about twentyfive, height 5 ft. 9 in., medium build, ruddy complexion, wavy fair hair : dressed in a navy-blue suit, and probably wearing a fawn soft felt Rex brand hat (size 6|), with “ Wilson and Shaw, Outfitters, Huntly,” branded inside ; smart appearance. Accused obtained a hat and a shirt, value £1 lOs., and £3 9s. cash from Wilson and Shaw, storekeepers, by means of a valueless cheque for £4 19s. 6d. The cheque was one of two stolen from the cheque-book of A. S. Howard, farmer, Te Hoe, who, with accused, occupied a room at the Taupiri Hotel on the 29th ultimo. There are other charges pending. Hamilton. —16th ultimo, on warrant for forgery, H. Leek (name probably fictitious), age about forty-two, height about 5 ft. 10 in., medium build, fresh complexion, long fair hair, broken nose, thin face ; dressed in a navy-blue suit, dark slate-coloured felt hat with black band, and white striped tie. Accused forged the signature of F. M. Leek as an endorsement on the back of a cheque for £9, and uttered it to Sydney Reeves Hawken, gentlemen’s outfitter, Victoria Street, from whom he purchased some socks and Apex shirts. The cheque had been lost by Frank Morris Leek.

Hamilton. —6th instant, on warrant for failing to maintain his wife, Ivy Adams, 40 Anglesea Street, Howard Leslie Adams, age twenty-eight, height about 5 ft. 9 in., traveller, native of New Zealand, slight build, fair complexion and hair, blue eyes; dressed in a light-grey suit, felt hat, and brown overcoat. Wanganui. —On or about the 2nd ultimo, on warrant for theft of a suit (recovered), value £8 Bs., the property of Frederick Albert Rose, labourer, Leonard Greenwood Orr, age eighteen, height 5 ft. 7 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, light-brown hair, hazel eyes, scars on ankles and on soles of feet; dressed in light trousers and brown coat; rides a Raleigh motor - bicycle. Complainant’s suit was at Do Luen’s shop in Victoria Avenue, from where accused took possession of it and gave it away to his brother. (See Police Gazette, 2928, mage 603.)

Feilding. —l6th ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Wanganui Prison for twenty-eight days in default of paying £5 15s. arrears on a maintenance order for the support of his two children, in the care of the Education Department, Matthew John Johnston, age about forty-six, height 5 ft. 8 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fair complexion, brown hair, blue eyes: dressed in dark-grey suit; frequents hotels. iffoj

Palmerston North. —l3th August last, on warrant for obtaining credit by fraud, Crewe, age forty, height 5 ft. 5 in., dairy inspector, native of New Zealand, stout build, fresh complexion, fair hair, probably blue eyes with faint cast in one, round shoulders ; dressed in a grey suit. Accused stayed from the 13th August to the sth ultimo at the Masonic Hotel and obtained board, value £2O, from the licensee, Frederick Colvin, by fraudulently representing that he had a bank account and a motor-car at Hastings. He was accompanied by a woman (age about thirty, height about 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, fair complexion ; dressed in a brown costume ; frail-looking), and after quitting complainant’s hotel they stayed at the Manchester Hotel, Feilding, until the 27th ultimo, when they disappeared without paying for their board, accused in this instance having given the name Edwards. He may be identical with Charles Edward Crews, formerly proprietor of the Napier Dairy Co., who has deserted his wife and children; and, if he is so identical, the woman accompanying him may be Marvel Edna Davies, who at one time was employed in his office.

Wellington. — instant, for failing to comply with the conditions of his release upon probationary license, Ernest Nicholls, alias Power, alias McCallum, age forty-nine, height 5 ft. 6f in., bootmaker, native of Australia, dark complexion, black hair, brown eyes, long nose, right arm broken ; heart, dagger, and coat-of-arms on right arm, tombstone on left arm. Nelson. —11th July last, for assaulting Dorothy Iris Sutherland, 78 Waimea Road, Man (name unknown), age about twenty-eight, height about 5 ft. 9 in. Complainant, who was sleeping on the veranda of her house about 11.15 p.m., was assaulted by accused. No warrant.

Nelson. lsth July last, for indecently assaulting Evelyn Hanna Crooks (age thirteen years and a half), Toi Toi Street, Man (name unknown), age about thirty, height about 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, fresh complexion. Accused enticed complainant into an unoccupied office in Hardy Street, where he committed the offence. No warrant.

Grey mouth. —10th instant, on warrant of commitment to Greymouth Prison for one month in default of paying £23 2s. arrears on a maintenance order for the support of his illegitimate child, of whom Elizabeth Meredith is the mother, Alfred Smith, age twenty-five, height 5 ft. 5 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, stout build, fresh complexion, brown hair, blue eyes ; portion or right little finger missing, long scar on left forearm. Christchurch. —20th August last, on warrant for failing to maintain his illegitimate child, of whom Doris Mabel Hann, domestic, 169 Antigua Street, is the mother, George Henry Chapman, age twenty-three, height about 5 ft. 4 in., butcher, strong build, fresh complexion, fair hair, blue eyes, large nose ; usually dressed in a navy-blue suit, brown felt hat, and navyblue overcoat. He may be identical with man of same name, referred to in Police 1930, page 628.

Christchurch. 6th instant, on warrant for failing to comply with the terms of a maintenance order for the support of his wife, Thomas Hale, age forty-two, height 5 ft. in., tailor, native of New Zealand, medium build, dark complexion and hair, brown eyes, scar on nose ; usually well dressed in a navy-blue suit and dark-tan boots. Arrears to 4th August last, £6. (See Police Gazette, d 927, page 823.)

Christchurch. —2nd August last, for forgery, Leslie Cecil McCarthy, age thirty-three, height ft. 5 in., jockey, native of New Zealand, slight build, sallow complexion, fair hair, grey eyes, large nose; dressed in a navy-blue suit, felt hat turned down in front, navy-blue raincoat, and white silk scarf. At 10.17 a.m. on Saturday, 2nd August last, a telegram, purporting to be from Clarrie McCarthy, was sent from Christchurch to “ Irving, Wilson’s Hotel, Reefton,” asking for £6O to be sent to McCarthy, G.P.0., Christchurch. Thomas Chambers Irving, licensee, Wilson’s Hotel, Reefton, believing the request was from Clarrie McCarthy, who had Irving’s horse “ Tukatama ” at Christchurch, transmitted £SO, which was collected the same day The accused was in Christchurch, and he is suspected. If located, an urgent communication is to be sent to the Superintendent of Police, Christchurch, who will forward the file. No warrant. (See Police Gazette, 1925, page 288.) jY*

Miller (name probably fictitious), age about thirty-two, height 5 ft. 8 in., labourer, slight build, fresh complexion, brown hair, small lump on left side of face, clean-shaved. Accused obtained goods value £3 6s. 3d. and £6 7s. 9d. in cash from Gustavus Wallen, shop-assistant, 419 Wilsons Road, by means of a valueless cheque for £9 14s.

Christchurch. 6th instant, on warrant for failing to comply with the terms of a maintenance order for the support of his son, Harold Hanwell, in the care of the Education •Department, Charles Hanwell, alias Henwell, age about fortytwo, height 5 ft. 9 in., labourer and gardener, slight build, pale complexion, dark-brown hair ; usually dressed in a black felt hat and dark suit.
