Auckland. —sth July last, for false pretences, H. Slade, age about thirty-four, height about 5 ft. 8 in., stout build, dark complexion, prominent nose, clean-shaved; dressed in a blue serge suit and bowler hat, and carried a small attachecase. Accused obtained £6 from Alexander Kirk, storekeeper, 238 Campbell Road, Greenlane, by means of a valueless cheque for that amount on the Bank of New Zealand, No. P 76652. The cheque was from a cheque-book which was lost last year by Wilfred McAra, builder. No warrant.

Auckland. —10th instant, on warrant of commitment to Auckland prison for three months in default of paying £B3 18s. arrears due on a maintenance order for the support of his wife, Cora Clarke Herdson, and five children, Herbert Montague Herdson, age about thirty-eight, height 5 ft. 11 in., labourer and salesman, native of New Zealand, medium build, fair complexion and eyes. q

Otahuhu. — 11th instant, on warrant for failing to comply with the terms of a maintenance order for the support of his wife, Harriett Dorothy Tudor Ross, Great South Road, Allen Edward Ross, age twenty-five, height 5 ft. 1\ in., baker, native of New Zealand, strong build, fresh complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, broken nose ; usually well dressed in a lightgrey suit with Oxford bags and brown shoes. Stratford. —4th ultimo, on warrant for unlawfully using a motor-car (recovered), value £225, the property of Vivian Roy Gravestock, garage-proprietor, Robert Allan Barton, age twenty-two, height 5 ft. 7 in., farm labourer, native of Australia, medium build, dark complexion, black hair, darkbrown eyes, one right upper tooth missing; dressed in a navy-blue suit, fawn felt hat, and reddish-brown overcoat. Having previously arranged to purchase the car, he called at the garage with an envelope addressed to Mr. Gravestock, which was supposed to contain £IOO, the deposit agreed upon. Complainant being absent, accused was permitted to take the car, after which the envelope was found to be empty. The vehicle was subsequently found abandoned at Hamilton.

Hastings. —loth instant, on warrant for failing to maintain his wife, Ruby Myrtle Orr, and four children, 603 Henry Street, James Orr, age forty-four, height 5 ft. 10 in., labourer and gardener, native of New Zealand, medium build, dark complexion, dark hair turning grey, brown eyes, left wrist broken ; ring on right middle finger. Accused obtained £6 from James Scott Wilson, garage-proprietor, Victoria Avenue, by means of a valueless cheque for that amount.

Wellington. — 26th ultimo, for theft of a travelling clock (recovered), value £5 10s., the property of Charles Effort, adjutant, Salvation Army Hostel, Vivian Street, S. Snowden (name probably fictitious), age fifty, height 5 ft. 8 in., labourer, medium build, brown hair, brown waxed moustache ; dressed in a brown suit, dark-grey felt hat, and white scarf. The clock was stolen from an office in the hostel and sold to a second-hand dealer for ss. No warrant.

Wellington. — July last, on warrant for failing to maintain his wife, Florence Jane McDuff, 147 Lang Street, Miramar, Victor John McDuff, age forty-two, height 5 ft. 8f in., motor engineer and mechanic, native of New Zealand, slight build, pale complexion, black hair turning grey, darkbrown eyes, long prominent nose, slight scar on left cheek; dressed in a navy-blue suit and felt hat; slightly stooped. Wellington. —On or about the 6th instant, on warrant for theft of £2l 10s. 6d., the property of the Colonial Mutual Life Assurance Society, 117 Customhouse Quay, Arthur Duke Simpson, age forty-five, height 5 ft. 4J- in., insurance canvasser and collector, native of England, slight build, fresh complexion, fair hair going bald, brown eyes ; dressed in a darkgrey suit, fawn felt hat, and black shoes. Accused, who was employed by the above-mentioned society, collected the sum of £2l 10s. 6d. from Mary Eileen Matheson and others on terms requiring him to pay it to his employers, but fraudulently omitteddo. //j/jS* x

Accused received the sum of £3O from Ethel May Croft on terms requiring him to pay it to Smith, Wylie, and Co., but fraudulently omitted so to do. Further sums are involved.
