MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION.

Memorandum.] Police interviewing Children at Public Schools.

Further to instructions on this subject published in Police Gazette, 1925, page 658, it is desired that where a child is interviewed by the police apart from its parents, unless there are good reasons to the contrary, the result of the interview be communicated to the parents without delay. The natural emotions and anxieties of the parent should, of course, be treated with all possible consideration, and all information, the disclosure of which would not be obviously against the interests of justice, of the child or his parents, should be given to its parents. The objective being the reformation of the child, the police should give to the parents any advice or assistance which in the best interests of the child they feel can be given with discretion and due regard to the proper discharge of their duty.

W. G. W ohlmann, Commissioner of Police Wellington, 3rd September, 1930. (P. 27/1054.)
