Waitaea.9th instant, on warrant for false pretences, L. R. Johnstone, age about thirty, height about 5 ft. 7 in., native of New Zealand, slight build, fresh complexion, fair hair, blue eyes, left hand withered ; dressed in a grey suit and cap and tan boots. John Albert Shea, hotelkeeper, gave accused four blank cheques, one of which he filled in for £ls and obtained that amount from Shea. It was subsequently ascertained that he had no account at the bank. He may have a dark-blue single-seater Oakland motor-car, engine No. 03575W4, registration No. 56-979, and may be accompanied by a girl (name unknown), age about sixteen, fair complexion and hair, round features. Jackson (name probably fictitious), age about thirty-three, height about 5 ft. 7 in., strong build, dark complexion and hair; dressed in a dark tweed suit and felt hat; may have slight impediment in speech. Accused, who obtained from the National Bank of New Zealand, Riddiford Street, two blank cheques, forged the signature of J. O’Brien, carrier, to one for £lO and uttered it to Martha Gustofson, licensee, Post Office Hotel.
