Accused, who conducted an auction mart, also undertook the collection of rates for the Patangata County Council, and received £4OB os. 4d. from Murray, Roberts, and Co., Napier, on terms requiring him to account for it to that body, but fraudulently omitted to account for £lB2 4s. 7d.

'Wanganui. —On or about the 24th ultimo, on warrant for theft of a pair of trousers (recovered), value £1 10s., the property of John Duncan, railway cadet, Broadway Boardinghouse, St. Hill Street, Ernest William Sampson, age twentytwo, height 5 ft. 9 in., printer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, light-brown hair, grey eyes, mark on right cheek, scar on right knee ; dressed in a light-grey suit and black shoes ; talkative ; good appearance. Accused, who stated that he was representing the Gane Milking Machine Co., Hawera, was given a room in the above boardinghouse. He stayed a few days and disappeared without paying his board. The trousers were stolen from the bedroom occupied by him, and were subsequently recovered at a second-hand shop. He ma.y pose as a marine engineer. Brown (name probably fictitious), age about thirtyfive, height about 5 ft. 8 in., thin build, dark complexion and hair, scar behind right ear; hesitating speech. Accused obtained a ladies’ open-face gold wristlet watch, expanding bracelet, “A.M.” engraved on back, value £7 155., from Edwin Homer Gleed, watchmaker, 164 Riddiford Street, by falsely representing that the owner of the watch, Miss Maher, had sent him to get the watch on her behalf.

Wellington. 23rd December last, for theft of a gentlemen’s light-grey gabardine Dexter overcoat, value £8 155., identifiable, the property of the D.1.C., Wellington, Mian (name unknown), age forty-five,' height 5 ft. 7 in., medium build, ruddy complexion ; dressed in a navy-blue suit, grey Cardigan, and cap ; seaman appearance. Accused, who requested to be shown some, overcoats, put on the abovedescribed coat and ran with it from the shop. No warrant.

Cheviot. Between the Bth November and the 2nd December last, on warrant for theft- of £27 3s. 9d., the property of his father, Francis Albert Franks, rabbiter, Glen Dhu, George Albert Franks, age twenty, height 5 ft. 9 in., rabbiter and labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fair complexion and hair, blue eyes ; dressed in a navy-blue coat and riding-breeches, or a dark suit. Accused, who with his father was employed rabbiting at Motunau, received from his employer two cheques for £54 7s. 6d., which he cashed and disappeared. Half the amount was the property of complainant.

Christchurch. —sth ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Paparua Prison for three months in default of paying £8 4s. arrears due on a maintenance order for the support of his wife, Harry Yeatman, age twenty-four, height 5 ft. 7 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, fair hair, blue eyes ; usually dressed in a grey suit and hat.
