Auckland. —On or about the 14th September last, for false pretences, J. W. A. Zwaylor, age about thirty-five, height oft. 9in., medium build, dark complexion; wears a fawn overcoat; speaks slowly. Accused obtained ss. from John Crossland, labourer, 32 Edgars Road, New Lynn, by falsely representing that prize-money would be paid to successful competitors in a crossword puzzle which he published, and that a rescrutiny of solutions would be made on payment of ss. He is believed to be identical with Frederick Theodore Desmond Poulton, alias Bertram Bur wood, referred to in Police Gazette, 1927, page 808, and Photograph®, 1918, page 49. Auckland. 3lst August last, on warrant for theft of three rings (one recovered), total value £35, the property of William Goodsell, antique dealer, 456 Upper Queen Street, Nath Satyendra Ghatterjee, alias Stanley William Roy-Chaitergi, alias Le Todd, age thirty-three, height 5 ft. 6 in., canvasser, native of India, stout build, dark complexion, black hair, brown eyes ; scar under left eye and on left middle finger ; well dressed ; wears double-breasted coat and dark overcoat; plausible manner. Accused stated to complainant that he desired to buy a ring for his wife, and was given three rings from which to make a selection. He subsequently pawned one ring for £1 55., and may be in possession of the other two — gold ring set with a large sapphire surrounded by six diamonds, and a gold ring set with three turquoises and five diamonds. Auckland. —26th May last, for false pretences, Norman Walters, age about twenty-two, height about 5 ft. 6 in., medium build, dark complexion and hair, brown eyes, good looking. Accused obtained a shirt, overcoat, tie, and a pair of shoes, value £8 12s. 6d., from John Court (Limited), drapers, by falsely representing that his father, Herman Walters, Paragon Shoe Company, Melbourne, would pay for them. Auckland. 2sth ultimo, on Bench warrant for failing to appear at the Supreme Court to plead to indictments for theft of two overcoats, value £8 155., the property of Jack Wilson Menzies and Cecil James Stadden Lea, William James Courtney, age forty-two, height 5 ft. 7J in., seaman and labourer, native of New Zealand, strong build, fresh complexion, dark-brown hair, hazel eyes ; ships, flags, and clasped hands on right forearm ; usually dressed in a blue serge suit, grey' felt hat, and tan boots. Accused stayed with complainant, who lent her the umbrella, which she sold to a dealer for 3s. She may be in possession of a china entree-dish and a small leather suit-case, which have also been stolen. There are other charges pending. She may be identical with Evelyn Lylia McLean, alias Wright, referred to in Police Gazette, 1927, page 712, and Photographs, 1923, page 20. No warrant.

The bicycle was stolen from the Land and Income Tax Offices and sold to a pawnbroker for 15s. by a man of above description. No warrant.

Accused obtained £3 from Alfred Lulham, manager, Royal Oak Hotel, by means of a valueless cheque for that amount on the Bank of New Zealand, Te Puke. He may be in possession of a cheque-book on the Bank of New Zealand, Te Aro, Wellington, and he may be identical with Henry Ray Vercae, referred to in Police Gazette, 1923, page 20, and Photographs, 1912, page 61. Accused enticed Cyril Robertson Bradwell (age eleven) into a public telephone cabinet, where he committed the offence. No warrant.

Christchurch. —10th August last, on warrant for theft of 19s. 9d. in money, the property of C. E. Holliss and Company, 347 Colombo Street, Victor Tslshard, age thirty-two, height 6 ft., labourer, fireman, and motor-driver, native of New Zealand, strong build, fresh complexion, fair hair; usually dressed in a dark suit and light-felt hat. Accused was employed by complainant delivering coal and received the sum of 19s. 9d. on terms requiring him to account for or pay the same to his employer, which lie failed to do. Accused obtained two cows, a steer, and’a calf, value £l2, from Agnes Duthie, Waihola, by falsely representing that a cheque for payment of same had been posted.
