Accused obtained a watch and a cheque for £6 14s. from Hyman Meltzer, pawnbroker, Victoria Street, by means of a valueless cheque for £lO. On the same day accused cashed the cheque given to him by complainant.

Auckland. —3rd instant, for indecent assault, EVlan (name unknown), age about thirty, height 5 ft. 9 in., medium build ; wearing a light raincoat and cap. About 10 p.m. in Shackleton Road, Mount Eden, accused indecently assaulted Jean Richards. No warrant. * ;

January last, on warrant for false pretences, George Warren, alias George Wilson, alias Wallace, age fifty-two, height 5 ft. 9 in., advertising agent, native of England, strong build, ruddy complexion, dark-brown hair, grey eyes, red nose, dot on left wrist, lump on left side of neck ; dressed in a reddish-brown suit and grey felt hat; deep voice ; fond of drink. Accused obtained £2 from William Henry Jackson, bootmaker, 626 Dominion Road, by falsely representing that he was erecting a utility clock cabinet in the Capitol Theatre, and that for the above amount he would place the business advertisement of complainant thereon. Auckland. — 12th instant, for unlawfully using a motorcar, the property of Thomas O’Halloran, and mischief, Two hi SR (names unknown)(l) age about thirty-five, height 5 ft. 10 in., thin build ; dressed in a light-grey suit and lightgrey felt hat : and (2) short and stout; dressed in a dark suit and light-coloured cap. The accused took the car from Albert Street and drove it to Parnell, where it collided with a telegraph-post,being damaged to the extent of £9. No warrant.

Mercer. October last, for false pretences, Stanley Hoffman, age twenty-eight, height 5 ft. 8 in., tailor, native of New Zealand, medium build, dark complexion, dark-brown hair, blue eyes, scar and anchor on left forearm, scar on right upper arm, scar between eyes and on back of neck ; dressed in a dark navy-blue serge suit and light-fawn soft felt hat; peculiar accent. Accused obtained board and lodging, value 10s. 6d. from Cora Alice Walden, boardinghouse-keeper, Pokeno, by falsely representing that he was a lineman employed by the Post and Telegraph Department, He is also suspected of stealing £2 from James Keogh, motor-driver, with whom he shared a room. Hamilton. 2lst instant, on warrant for failing to comply with the terms of a maintenance order for the support of his three children in the care of the Education Department, Reginald Charles Williams, alias Jack Williams, age twentysix, height 5 ft. 8 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, slight build, dark complexion and hair, blue eyes, prominent teeth ; dressed in a blue serge suit and light-felt hat. Gisborne. 2lst instant, for failing to comply with the conditions of his release upon probation (Offenders Probation Act, .1920), Joseph Gilbert Johnson, age thirty-one, height 5 ft. 91 in., seaman, labourer, and side-showman, native of Australia, medium build, fresh complexion, black hair, brown eyes, Kangaroo, “Australia,” Indian, and pierced heart on right forearm; “ J.J. Taiiiape. 24th January last, for obtaining credit by fraud, Man (name unknown), age about thirty-two, height 5 ft. 7 in., labourer, strong build, fresh complexion, dark-brown hair, brown moustache; dressed in riding-breeches and brown leggings, light sports coat, light-felt hat and tan boots; smart appearance. Accused hired from the Aard taxiproprietors, Palmerston North, a car to take him to Taihape. On arrival at Taihape he eluded the driver and disappeared without paying his fare —£6 16s. No warrant.

Palmerston North. —11th instant, on warrant of commitment to Wellington Prison for 1 month in default of paying £7 14s. fine and costs for assault, Richard Lloyd, age thirty, height 5 ft. 10 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, slight build, fresh complexion, fair hair, blue eyes ; usually dressed in a dark-grey suit and grey felt hat. Wellington. —llth instant, on warrant of commitment to Wellington Prison for 5 days in default of paying £2 ss. fine and' costs for being found on licensed premises during prohibited hours, John Smith, age twenty-three, height 5 ft. 8 in., labourer, native of England, fair complexion, brown hair; usually dressed in light-grey trousers and blue coat and cap. He is supposed to have left the Dominion on the 9th instant as a trimmer on the s.s. “ lonic.”

Wellington. —22nd instant, for failing to comply with the conditions of his release upon probationary license, Edgar Hodgson, alias Patterson, alias Watson, alias Walker, age fifty, height 5 ft. B,| in., carpenter, native of New Zealand, fresh complexion, dark-brown hair, hazel eyes, large nose, scar on forehead and on chin. Wellington. —Bth December last, for theft of a bicycle (recovered), value £lO, the property of Hughie Gray, clerk, 27 Rua Street, H. Taylor, age about twenty-three, height 5 ft. 6 in., medium build, dark complexion and hair ; dressed in a dark pepper-and-salt suit and dark-felt hat; smart appearance. The bicycle was stolen from Victoria Street and sold to a bicycle-dealer at Petone by a man of the description given. He may be identical with man of same name referred to in Police Gazette, 1926, page 356. No warrant.

Christchurch. —16th instant, on warrant for failing to maintain his illegitimate child, of whom Sarah Humphrey, is the mother, William John Leslie Arnold Hampton, age thirty, height about 5 ft. 8 in., fitter, native of England, medium build, dark complexon, fair hair going bald, blue eyes, scar on back of head ; usually dressed in a brown suit.

Christchurch. —21st instant, on warrant of commitment to Paparua Prison for three weeks in default of paying £6 11s. line and costs for fighting, Robert Richards, age thirty-four, height 5 ft. 11 in., blacksmith, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, fair hair, brown eyes, scar on left cheek, varicose veins in legs. Temuka. —19th instant, for theft of a Chevrolet motor-car (recovered), value £l5O, the property of Robert Mills, farmer, Man (name unknown), age about nineteen, height 5 ft. 8 in., medium build, dark complexion and hair; dressed in a dark suit (no hat). Accused unlawfully drove the car from Temuka to Halswell, where he abandoned it. Ho warrant.

Invercargill. —23rd instant, that he may be interviewed regarding the paternity of the illegitimate child of Margaret Jane Brown, Fred Reynolds, age about twenty-five, height about 5 ft. 6 in., seaman, native of New Zealand, dirty appearance. Inquiry by the Education Department.

Invercargill. —26th ultimo, on warrant for false pretences, 0. Dion, alias leion (names probably fictitious), age about thirty, height about 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, sallow sunburnt complexion, dark hair, dark short military moustache, full face ; ' dressed in a navy-blue suit, grey soft hat, and black silk socks, or a grey suit (sometimes does not wear a hat) ; talkative. Accused, who said he was a traveller for the Massey-Harris Company, obtained goods, value 175., and £3 3d. cash from Horace Walter Russell Anderson, clothier, Winton, by means of a valueless cheque for £4 Os. 6d. His photograph is filed in the Inspector’s Office, Invercargill.

Valentine Johns, alias Vivian Ellison, age twenty-nine, height 5 ft. 7 in., cook, native of New Zealand, medium build, sallow complexion, black hair, brown eyes, scar under right eye, large nose. His license has been cancelled and his return to the nearest prison is desired. His period of probation expires on the 10th November, 1927, after which no action is to be taken. P. 27/360.
