♦ Newton. —17th May last, on warrant for manslaughter, William Sinclair, age about sixteen, height 5 ft. 5 in., electrical engineer, native of New Zealand, strong build, greasy sallow complexion, thick dark-brown hair, grey eyes, front teeth overlapping and decayed, heavy eyebrows and features; dressed in a dark-brown suit with short trousers (no hat); surly expression; slovenly gait. Accused, by negligently driving a motor-car in Karangahape Road, killed Kate Doweling. He may have gone to Australia.

Auckland. 27th April last, for false pretences, R. De Laney (name probably fictitious), age about thirty, height 5 ft. 10 in., medium build, fresh complexion, brown hair; dressed in a grey or brown suit. Accused obtained medicine, value 3s. 6d., and £4 16s. 6d. cash from Owen Silvanus Wiles, chemist, Broadway, Newmarket, by means of a valueless cheque for £5 on the Bank of New South Wales, Whangarei, drawn by Harold Bailey, in favour of R. De Laney. He may be identical with Victor James De Laney, alias James Roberts, &c., referred to in Police Gazette, 1922, page 167, and Photographs, 1923, page 58, who has been interviewed, but no evidence resulted. No warrant.

Accused, who had nominated a horse —“ Tokomono ” races run at Wanganui on above dates, tendered to the secretary, Wanganui Jockey Club, two cheques for £lO and £2O in payment for fees, receiving £9 12s. change. Accused obtained £3 from Charles Simpson, caretaker, Feilding Racecourse, by falsely representing that he was a farmer from Wellsford and a relative of complainant’s son-in-law, Mr. Legg, of that district. Accused obtained £33 (in sums of £3, £lO, and £2O) from Blanche Cooke (whom he had engaged as housekeeper), 318 Church Street, by falsely representing that he was going to buy cattle at Foxton for his farm and required the money to pay for trucking them.
