SPECIAL INQUIRIES.
Christchurch. — are to be made to establish the identity of a newly-born female child whose dead body was found among gorse at Burnham. The body was wrapped in a single bed-sheet, a chemise, and a night-dress, and appeared to have been dead from three to four weeks. Death was due to strangulation, caused by a piece of cloth being bound round the neck, and at the inquest a verdict of murder by some person or persons unknown was returned. Any information regarding this matter is to be communicated to the Inspector of Police, Christchurch.
Dunedin. — are to be made to establish the identity of a Man (name unknown), whose body was found in Dunedin Harbour, at Macandrew Bay, on the Ist instant. The body had apparently been in the water for some weeks. Description : Age about forty-five, height about 5 ft. 5 in., medium build, brown hair going bald in front, good teeth,
round features ; dressed in greenish-grey saddle-tweed trousers, dark-grey vest, pepper-and-salt-coloured underpants which had been darned, white shirt with blue stripes, greyflannel singlet, golf-stockings (odd), one with red-and-yellow top and the other with blue-and-white top, heavy shootingboots (size 9), striped Hercules braces. On the 19th June last a coat of similar material to the vest referred to above and a hat were found on Birch Street Wharf. These articles of clothing probably belonged to deceased. The coat-pockets contained four pennies, five halfpennies, a gold locket with three sides, a collar-stud, a white-silk and cotton neck-tie or scarf, and a white handkerchief, “ Specially manufactured for Reddell’s, Ltd., Reliable Tailors, Outfitters, Dunedin,” on tab of coat. Any information regarding deceased is to be communicated to the Superintendent &l Police, Dunedin.
