Auckland. —18th May last, for theft from the person of Alexander Stewart, 20 Graham Street, of a silver double-curb double watch-chain, value £l, Man (name unknown) age about twenty-seven, height 5 ft. 7 in., stout build, dark hair and complexion ; dressed in a grey suit. At the corner of Federal and Victoria Streets accused snatched the watchchain from complainant’s vest and ran away. No warrant.

In Baker Street about 7.45 p.m. complainant’s wallet containing £1 was taken from him by the men described. He recovered the money. No warrant.

Accused obtained goods, value, 4s. 10d., from Frederick Hamilton Hammond, grocer and baker, Willow Street, by falsely representing that they were for Peter Thomas Keam. He is also suspected of stealing an aged half-draught bay mare, fifteen hands, white blaze on face, left hind foot white, broken knees, value £2O, the property of Francis William Keam/ Welcome Bay.

Accused, who opened a business as dry-cleaners at 71 Courtenay Place, induced complainant to take a third share, and he deposited in the bank £2OO to be used in the business. He was leaving the city for a few days, and left with his partners three blank cheques, which he signed on the understanding that they were to be used to pay small accounts.
