MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION.

Circular No. 14/21.] Civil Service Offices held by Police—Correspondence and Returns. Members of the Force who hold appointments in other Departments are hereby instructed to furnish all returns and correspondence relating to the work of such Departments punctually and regularly according to the Treasury and other regulations relating thereto. Delay in furnishing periodical returns, even if they are “ Nil,” causes corresponding delay in furnishing the return for the whole Department in question required from the Head Office. Correspondence should also receive reasonably prompt attention, and, where information cannot be furnished within the time required, a note should be despatched to the Head or other office, as the case may be, explaining the cause. Attention to such details would promote efficiency and satisfaction in the work of the various Departments affected, and enhance appreciation of the services rendered by the police.

J. O’Donovan, Commissioner of Police Wellington, 6th October, 1921.

Circular No. 15/21.] Prosecutions under the Defence Act, 1909.

When a responsible officer of the Defence Department furnishes particulars in writing of certain persons having committed offences by failing to attend parades or camps, or having unlawfully disturbed parades or drills, or committed other acts which are punishable under the Defence Acts in the Magistrate’s Court or other Civil Court, on dates within the last past six months, and the locality where committed is stated, the police will take charge of the case for the purpose of prosecution in the same manner as prosecutions on behalf of Departments are dealt with. It will be the duty of the police, before laying the information, to see that the case is complete for the purpose of a prosecution in the same way as all other police cases. If any case fail by reason of incorrect information supplied by the officer of the Defence Department and costs be given against the police informant, the Police Department will pay the costs and charge them to the Defence Department. The reports of the military officers will be made in the first instance to the Inspector of Police of the police district in which the offence occurs, and such Inspector will, as soon as possible after the prosecution, notify the military officer of the result.
