Christchurch. On or about the 12th August last, on warrant for obtaining credit to the amount of £1,558 12s. by fraud, Alfred Jeynes, alias Donald Joyce, age about forty-four, height about 5 ft. 10 in., native of Australia or Scotland, strong build, florid complexion, reddish hair and moustache ; usually dresses well in different coloured suits, soft-felt hat which he wears to one side of head, and fawn overcoat. It is said that his correct name is Jeynes, and that he formerly lived at 103 Monmouth Street, Perth, Western Australia, and cams from Melbourne on a return permit in the name of Donald Joyce. He advertises in local papers, offering for ss. to instruct ladies how to dress their hair,: and usually gives as his address a post-office box. He was accompanied by his wife, age about thirty-five, short, large eyes, speaks quickly and dresses well, and three children, two girls, six years and three years respectively, and a boy five years. Accused, by falsely representing himself to be a wealthy man from Scotland and one of the firm of Joyce and Co., Steel-rolling Mills, Glasgow, and that he and his father were starting a similar, business in Christchurch, induced Edward Arthur Langford, builder, New Brighton, to build a house for £1,500.
