Uniform Clothing.

The following instructions relative to the free issue of clothing from tbe Police Store are issued for the guidance of the members of the Force, and all previous instructions thereon are hereby cancelled. Issues of clothing will be made to all non-commissioned officers and constables according to the “ Scale of Allowance,” as recommended by the officers in charge of districts. All tweed and Bedford cord must be made up into the garments for which intended within one month from the date of issue, and a report submitted to the Officer in Charge of the district when the tailoring has been completed. The cost of making will be paid for by the member of the Force concerned out of his uniform allowance, and Officers in Charge of districts will see that uniforms are properly and uniformly made, and that the material is not used for any other purpose than that for which it is issued. Supplies are not to be applied for unless actually required, and before recommending any requisition the Officer in Charge of the district must be satisfied that the article should be replaced. District and Native constables will not be supplied with uniforms unless recommended by the Officer in Charge of the district.

Coat, Night Duty. —One every three years, unless under exceptional oiroumstances and recommended by the Officer in Charge of the district. At stations where night duty is not performed the coats should last for a much longer period. This coat will not be issued to clerks, mounted men, or constables in charge of country stations, exoept where reoommended.

Goat, Waterproof. —One every two years. Chevrons, Silver. —Three sets on promotion to rank of sergeant; to be replaced as recommended. Crowns, Silver. —Two on promotion to rank of senior sergeant ; to be replaced as recommended. Crowns, Worsted. —One on promo.ion to rank of senior sergeant; to be replaced as recommended. Frock. —First issue on joining the Force, second issue in twelve months, and subsequent issues every eighteen months.

Helmet, Blue. —One every eighteen months, excepting where white helmets are worn, when it should last two years.

Helmet, White. —One every three years. Leggings. —For mounted men ; one pair every two years. Riding-pants.—For mounted men; one pair every nine months. Trousers. —One pair every nine months.

Inspection op Clothing

All uniform clothing issued to members of the Foroe must be inspected as follows, viz.: At Headquarters stations when men are paraded to receive their monthly pay, and at out-stations either by the Officers in Charge of districts or the sergeants in charge of sub-districts when making their periodical visits. The object of the inspection is to ensure that the clothing is kept clean and in good condition, and a report should be made concerning every member whose clothing is not in good order after making due allowance for fair wear.

Measurements

In all requisitions for coats the length from seam under the collar to full length of coat is to be stated in inches, instead of the height of the member of the Force. The chest-measurement is to be taken over the frock. When requisitioning for leggings the measurement round calf is to be given.

Quantities of Materials,

The quantities of materials for making-up articles of uniform for men of average size are as follows: Frocks. —Sergeants’ and constables’: If yards braid, nine buttons, 1 yard cord (shoulder), If yards tweed. Frocks. —Senior sergeants’; 8 yards braid, two buttons, 1 yard cord (shoulder), If yards tweed. Riding-pants. —lJ yards Bedford cord. Trousers. —l§ yards tweed. Officers in Cnarge of districts may use their own discretion in recommending issues of extra Bedford cord or tweed to very tall or stout men.

All members of the Force entitled to uniform in accordance with the “ Scale of Allowance ” will submit requisitions in duplicate (Forms Nos. 86 and 87) for the same to Officers in Charge of districts, who will, after satisfying themselves that the articles should be replaced, transmit the requisitions to the Commissioner of Police, Wellington, to authorize the necessary issues. The original requisitions (Form No. 86) will be returned to be signed by the members receiving the clothing, and then sent to the Officer in Charge of the district, who after making the necessary entries on the clothing-issue sheets (Form No. 88), will return them to the Commissioner.

Uniform Clothing on Payment.

If any article of uniform clothing is required on payment, the requisition must be submitted in duplicate (Forms Nos. 89 and 90), and a report is to be attached stating the necessity for the article applied for.

Second-hand Clothing.

In the event of any member of the Foroe leaving the service he must band in all articles of uniform clothing, excepting trousers, to the Officer in Charge of the district, who will at once return them to the Police Storekeeper, Wellington.

When members of the Foroe are transferred from foot to mounted duty, or vice versa, on waterproof coats for the respective duties being supplied, the coat replaced must be returned to the Police Storekeeper. Foot constables appointed to mounted duty must also hand in their nightduty coats to be similarly returned, unless their retention is recommended by the Officer in Charge of the district.

White helmets on issue to members of the Foroe transferred to districts where they are not worn must also be returned to the Storekeeper. On the death of any member of the Force, provided it is not from an infectious disease, the free-issue clothing excepting trousers is to be returned to the Police Storekeeper ; if death results from an infectious disease, the clothing must be destroyed, and deceased’s clothing-issue sheet endorsed accordingly.
