Whangarei.—23rd July last, on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for seven days in default of paying £1 ss. fine and costs for a breach of the Defence Act, John O’Leary, age twenty-one, height 5 ft. 10 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, dark complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, broad build; generally wears a blue suit. He was recently employed by A. A. Brown, flax-miller, Waikanae.

Auckland.—-29th June last, on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for seven days in default of paying £1 13s. fine and costs for using insulting language on a tram-car, Sidney Jones (correct name supposed to be Julian) age twenty, height 5 ft. 8 in., native of England, slight build, dark complexion and hair, brown eyes, flower and scroll (“ Aggie”) on right wrist, scroll on left wrist.

Auckland.—6th ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for forty-eight hours in default of paying

Auckland. —15th August last, on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for seven days in default of paying £2 10s. fine and costs for a breach of his prohibition order, Arthur McKeown, age thirty-seven, height 5 ft. B£in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, sandy hair, grey eyes, anchor and wreath on left arm, “ E.” on left wrist, right arm has been broken.

Auckland. —3oth August last, on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for twenty-four hours, in default of paying Bs. fine and costs for drunkenness, and fourteen days in default of paying £3 3s. fine and costs for a breach of his prohibition order, Matthew O’Leary, age thirtytwo, height 5 ft. 8 in., storeman, native of Ireland, fresh complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, medium build, large head, short thick nose, scar on left wrist.

Queen Street Wharf (Auckland). — 26th ultimo, on warrant for deserting from the s.s. “ Kaipara,” G. Wood, age twenty-four, height 5 ft. 5 in., trimmer, native of England, fair hair and complexion, blue eyes, medium build, walks erect, clean-shaved, or may now have a fair scraggy beard, front teeth discoloured; dressed in shabby blue suit and cap ; wears a belt.

Taumarunui.— l2 th ultimo, on warrant for false pretences on Maurice John Belgrave, draper, G. Houghton, age about thirty, height about sft. 11 in., strong build, about I4st. weight, fair hair; smart appearance; was wearing a greytweed overcoat and grey cap. Offender gave complainant a valutless cheque for £6 10s., drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Te Kuiti, in payment for a pair of men's black box-calf boots, size 7, numbers on inside lining “ 7 F 42-2832 over 920-478 ”; a coloured neglige shirt, “Specially made for M. J. Belgrave, Draper and Mercer, Frankton Junction,” on the band; also a collar, a tie, ’kerchief, and braces, value £1 135., and received £4 17s. change. The blank cheque which he filled in was obtained by offender from Mr. Gates, Te Kuiti. The offender is supposed to be identical with John Kane, suspected of similar offences at Huntly and Masterton. Taumarunui. —12th ultimo, on warrant for false pretences on T. M. Peters, mercer, G. Houghton. (For description sea preceding paragraph.) Offender gave a valueless cheque for £5 2s. 6d. on the Bank of New Zealand, Te Kuiti, signed “G. Houghton,” to complainant in payment for a pair of black boots, size 8, branded on inside “ No. 623815, A. E. Marlow, Rockhampton, England,” value £1 10s., and received the change.

Napier. —9th ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Napier Prison for two months in default of paying £lO 10s. fine and costs for supplying liquor to a prohibited person, Bartholomew Mahoney, alias Patrick Maloney, age thirty-seven, height 5 ft. 6in , labourer, native of Ireland, strong build, fresh complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, heavy brown moustache ; dirty appearance.

Dannevirke. —2oth ultimo, that a summons may be served on him for a breach of his prohibition order, James Ross, age fifty-four, height 5 ft. BJin., blacksmith, native of Scotland, medium build, dark complexion, grey hair, hazel eyes, thick nose, scar on forehead and on left side of chin; generally wears a light-grey tweed suit, and black hard hat. He is said to be travelling for a patent gatefastener. (See Police Gazette, 1910, page 531.)

Pahiatua. —l3th ultimo, on warrant for false pretences on Joseph Kirkwood Carpenter, bootmaker, Tom Jones, age about twenty-six, height about 5 ft. 9 in., supposed native of England, stout build, brown hair, swarthy complexion, full round face; dressed in dark suit and heavy dark-tweed overcoat and felt hat or cap ; he was carrying a brief-bag, and is no doubt identical with James Farquer, Samuel Vance, and G. Houghton. (See Police Gazette, 1912, pages 459, 528, and this issue of Gazette.) Offender gave complainant a valueless eheque for £6 10s. on the Bank of New Zealand, Palmerston North, drawn in favour of Tom Jones, in payment for a pair of Bostock boots, value £1 55., and received the ohange.

Pahiatua. —13th ultimo, on warrant for false pretences on H. Herbert and Co., Ernest Gibbs, alias Tom Jones. (For description see preceding paragraph.) Offender gave complainant a valueless cheque for £5 in payment for goods, and received a balance of £3 19s. 6d. The cheque was drawn in favour of Ernest Gibbs. Offender obtained from a hairdresser named Linton in Palmerston North, three blank cheques on the Bank of New Zealand, Palmerston North, Nos. A 661638-9-40; the first two cheques were issued at Pahiatua. No. 661640 is still unissued. He also obtained two blank cheques from Edward Baucke, of Pahiatua, on the Bank of New Zealand, Pahiatua, Nos. A 1139 and All4O.

Eketahuna.— 22nd ultimo, on warrant for theft of £3 19s. sd. the money of John Porter, labourer, Alfred James Willason, age twenty-six, height about 5 ft. 8 in., labourer, has been a jockey, native of New Zealand, red complexion and hair, brown eyes, clean shaved, large prominent ears, bow legs, very pimply neck, stout active build, about 12 st. weight, a footballer; dressed in green-tweed riding-pants, tan leggings, dark-tweed coat and vest, and black hard hat; carrying a portmanteau and a ‘303 Govern-

ment rifle. His parents reside in Tinakori Road, Wellington. The money was given by complainant to offender (who was his mate splitting wood) to pay their bills, but he appropriated the money for his own use.

Wellington. —2sth ultimo, that she may be compelled to pay £7 Bs. arrears due for the maintenance of her child in the Receiving Home, Florence West, age twenty-six, height 5 ft. 5 in. or 6 in., waitress, native of England, slim build, dark-brown hair, grey eyes. Greymouth.— 26th August last, on warrant of commitment to Lyttelton Prison for six months in default of paying £4O fine and costs for being found in possession of opium, Joe Ping, age about sixty, height about 5 ft. 5 in., cook, native of China, speaks English, slight build, sallow complexion, black hair, brown eyes; dressed in dark suit and cap.

Greymouth. —24th ultimo, on warrant for failing to provide for the maintenance of his illegitimate child, James or Jeff Barlow, age about forty, height about 5 ft. 3 in., advertising agent, native of Australia, slight build, dark hair, blue eyes, small moustache only, point of nose inclined to right, one or two upper front teeth missing, small scar on forehead. Christchurch. —2nd August last, that a summons may be served on her for illtreating a child, Elizabeth Mary Hale, age thirty, height 5 ft. 6 in., native of New Zealand, medium build, dark hair, fresh complexion, very dark-brown eyes; usually wears a brown or navy-blue costume. She is accompanied by her husband George Forrest Hale, age about thirty-five, height about 5 ft. 7§in., medium build, florid complexion, blue eyes, fair hair and moustache. They have a young child with them.

Addington. —l9th ultimo, that she may be compelled to pay £5 17s. 2d. arrears due for the maintenance of her child, an inmate of the Christchuroh Receiving Home, Ruby Yickery, age about forty-three, height about 5 ft. 2 in., domestic, stout build, sallow complexion, brown eyes, dark hair, slovenly appearance, tosses her head when spoken to ; drtssed in pink skirt and white blouse. She is a married woman, but living apart from her husband. She was seen in Christchurch about the Ist of August last. Inquiry at the instance of the Education Department.

Ashburton. —loth ultimo, on warrant for failing to provide for the maintenance of his illegitimate child, Percy Baker, age about twenty-seven, height 5 ft. 6 in. or 7 in., farm labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fair hair and complexion, thin face, grey or blue eyes, cleanshaved ; probably dressed in dark sac suit and dark-tweed cap. Complainant, Sarah Ann Smith.

Ashburton. —25th ultimo, on warrant for theft of two £lO notes, four £5 notes on the Bank of New Zealand, £4 13s. in gold and silver, a small looking-glass with a white back, a brown pocket-book, a rolled-gold open-faoed keyless watch (“ R. Howard ” on inside of case), a rolled-gold chain and an oval gold locket (value £7), the property of Richard Howard, farm labourer, Frank Meagher, alias Frederick Mahoney, age eighteen, height 5 ft. 7 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, stout build, fresh complexion, lightbrown hair, blue eyes, broad nose, boil-mark on back of neck, an absconder from Burnham Industrial School; dressed in dark coat, dark-blue jersey, brown-moleskin pants, and grey cap with large checks. He was employed on the same farm as complainant, and was dismissed on the date the theft was committed.

Timaru. —On or about May last, on warrant for failing to provide for the maintenance of his wife, Martha Magdalene Jarvis, and his children, Edwin Henry Jarvis, age twenty-nine, height 5 ft. 9 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, very fair reddishcoloured curly hair, blue eyes, clean-shaved; dressed in navy-blue suit and Dr. Jim hat. He was recently working at Port Chalmers and Anderson’s Bay, Dunedin. (See Police Gazette, 1907, pages 292 and 356.)

Dunedin. —3rd August last, on warrant for disobeying an order of Court to pay £1 a week towards the support of his wife, Elizabeth Metcalf, George Metcalf, age fifty, height 5 ft. 9 in. or 10 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, slight build, brown hair, bald on top of head, front teeth decayed, speaks fast and indistinctly, second finger missing from right hand, walks a little lame. Was last heard of in the Oamaru district. On the above date he was in arrears £5 6s.

Dunedin. —26th ultimo, that he may be compelled to pay £3 16s. arrears due for the maintenance of his child in the industrial school, William Summers, age thirty-seven, 5 ft. 4f in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, dark hair and complexion, dark-brown eyes, mole on neck.

Orepuki.—Bth July last, on warrant for failing to provide for the maintenance of his mother, Mary Cosgrove, Timothy Edward Cosgrove, age thirty, height 6 ft. 4jin., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fair hair and complexion, brown eyes, clean-shaved (may have a fair moustache) ; dressed in dark sao suit and hard-felt hat or cap.
