Taihape. Since 30th ultimo, man, name supposed J. Lawrenz. age about twenty-two, height about sft. 7 in., medium build, fair complexion and hair, clean-shaved; dressed in dark-twefd suit and dark-tweed slouch hat, smart clean appearance. He left a brown-tin trunk 2 ft. long by 18 in. deep in the bush at Mataroa, and disappeared; two railway labels were on the trunk, Woodville and Woodlands; a piece of paper with Messrs. A. and W. McCarthy, McCarthy’s Buildings, Dunedin, was in the trunk ; also a label from Wright, Stephenson, and Co., Invercargill, with “ J. Lawrenz, passenger to Napier,” on it. The trunk contained a pair of leggings, short military pattern, with four large brass eyelet-holes in each; a blue-cloth vest, with squares;
a double oelluloid collar, size 15 ; a metal acetylene bioyclelamp, “ Riemann’s Phenomenon, H.R.C.H.G.,” on it; a steel watch-chain, with two Milner keys ; a rabbiters’ adze, with “ Braid and Co.” on it; six pea-rifle cartridges ; and several articles of clothing. He was a stranger at Mataroa, and fears are entertained that he is lost in the bush, as he expressed his intention of going to Auckland.
Wellington —Since April, 1908, Douglas Harrison age twenty-six, height 5 ft. 2 in., barman, native of England, medium build, fair freckled complexion, light-brown hair ; dressed in blue-serge suit and dark soft-felt hat. He was last heard of on above date at Allan’s Boardinghouse, Masterton. Inquiry'by John Frederick Charles Harrison, reporter, Wellington.
Reefton. —Since 10th instant, John Sweetman, age about seventy, height about 5 ft. Bin. or 9in., old-age pensioner, supposed native of England, stout build, full grey beard and moustache, very dirty appearance; dressed in brownish suit and felt hat ; hard of hearing; has impediment in speech, and is known as “Stuttering Jack’’; eccentric manner. Fears are entertained for his safety.
