PERSONS WANTED.
Auckland. -11th ultimo, on two warrants of commitment*to Mount Eden Gaol for forty eight hours on each in default of paying £3 ss. fine and costs for breaches of a prohibition order, John Herid Cummings, age sixty, height sft. Tin., labourer, native of England, medium build, fair oomplexion, grey hair, blue eyes.
Auckland. — 11th ultimo, on warrant for obtaining 3s. 6d. from David Cowie, labourer, by false pretences, George Allen, alias Captain Nella, age thirty, height sft. 8 in,, labourer and spieler, native of New Zealand, fair complexion, light-brown hair, blue eyes; dressed in blue vicuna or serge suit, black band on left arm, and brown Dr. Jim hat, with crape band. Offender obtained the above amount by representing he was a reporter, and would insert a notice in the Auckland Star for complainant.
Auckland. —2nd March last, on warrant of commitment to Mount Eden Gaol for forty-eight hours in default of paying £2 3s. fine and costs for drunkenness, Elizabeth Austin, age thirty - seven, height 5 ft. 2 in., prostitute, native of New Zealand, medium build, swarthy complexion, black hair, brown eyes, small nose. Mount Roskill Road. —14th ultimo, on warrant for obtaining 16s. 6d, from George Henry Collins by false pre-
tences, Abel Fletcher, age thirty-five, height 5 ft. 6 in., labourer and bricklayer, native of New Zealand, brown hair, brown moustache only ; usually wears a blue-serge suit and hard black hat.
Paeroa. —l9th ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Thames Gaol for seven days, in default of paying £4 fine and costs for breach of a prohibition order, Joseph Whitworth, age forty-six, height 5 ft. 8 in., cook, native of England, medium build, pale complexion, dark hair, hazel eyes, dark beard and moustache ; dressed in dark clothes and tweed cap.
Gisborne. £lO 95., money of John Russell Hill, groom, John Segar Buckland, age fifty-four, height 5 ft. 6 in., auctioneer, supposed colonial, medium build, clean-shaved except grey moustache, grey hair; usually dressed in greyish sac suit and brown soft hat; fond of drink. Offender sold a horse for complainant, and failed to account for the money. Other charges pending. He is said to have left for Sydney on the 17th June, per s.s. “ Zealandia.” (See Police Gazette, 1907, page 269.)
Napier. —4th instant, that a warrant of distress may be executed on him for failing to pay fine ar.d costs, George Moore, age twenty-six, height about 5 ft. 9 in., labourer, supposed German, speaks with a strong German accent, medium build, sandy hair and moustache, long face, light-grey eyes, very closely set, fresh complexion ; looks on the ground when speaking. Was last heard of at Pohui, Hawke’s Bay, on 15th ultimo.
Hastings. —lst ultimo, on warrant for theft of a cheque for £lO, property of Robert McGaffin, contractor, William Henry Hay Leith Ross, age forty-three, height sft. 10in., accountant, native of Scotland, medium build, fair complexion, light brown hair, blue eyes, fair moustache, lame in right leg, walks with stick; fond of drink ; dressed in a greenish-coloured suit and slate-coloured alpine hat. He was in complainant’s employ, and is supposed to have appropriated the cheque before being discharged.
New Plymouth.— About February last, on warrant for deserting his wife, Eliza Undine Schwann, at New Plymouth, Harold Schwann, age twenty-nine, height sft. 6in,, labourer, native of New Zealand, thin build, sallow complexion, large staring brown eyes, dark-brown hair, brown moustache only, may now be clean-shaved, very large teeth, high cheek-bones, scar on one leg from operation ; dressed in black sac suit and soft white shirt. Wanganui. —loth instant, for failing to comply with the terms of his release under the First Offenders’ Probation Act, John Fisher, age twenty-nine, height aft. 7Jin., cook, native of America, fair complexion, fair hair, grey eyes, pointed nose ; woman, “ I love Nellie,” and four dots tattooed on right arm. He may try to obtain work on the Midland Railway, and is known to Smith, who keeps the boardinghouse opposite the railway-station, Christchurch. He was sentenced at Wanganui for false pretences and theft to two years’ probation. The Probation Officer at Wanganui now desires his arrest, and that he may be sent to Wanganui. Wellington. —llth instant, on warrant for failing to provide for the future maintenance of his unborn illegitimate child, Harry Lund, age twenty-eight, height sft. Sin. or 9in., fire-brigade man, native of England, stout build, dark complexion, dark hair and eyes, black moustache ; dressed in dark suit and cap ; was a member of the Newtown Fire Brigade, and left there on the 7th instant. Complainant, Christina Archibald.
Wellington —l6th April last, for assaulting James Brett, ticket-collector, Opera House, Wellington, Man, name .unknown, age about twenty-five, height about 5 ft., tbick-set build, clean-shaved or small dark moustache; dressed in dark-tweed suit and hard black hat. Identifiable by Harry Domb, 18, Cambridge Terrace, Wellington. Offender went into the Opera House under the influence of drink and asked complainant for a race-card, and when requested to be quiet struck Brett, wbo was a cripple, in the face, threw him down the stairs, severely bruising him, and made off along Manners Street. No warrant.
Wellington. —loth instant, on warrant for failing to provide for the maintenance of his illegitimate child, Archibald Eaves, age about twenty-eight, height about sft. 10in., medium build, stooped shoulders, pale complexion, brown hair, blue eyes. Complainant, Mary Crowley. (See Police Gazette , page 145, where warrant appears for failing to provide for the future maintenance of his unborn illegitimate child.)
Wellington.— 3rd instant, on warrant for false pretences, W. C. Hird, age forty, height 5 ft. 11 in., native of New Zealand, medium build, fair complexion, brown hair, brown beard and whiskers tinged with grey clipped short to a point ; dressed in grey suit, trousers tight-fitting at knees ; accompanied by a tall woman about twenty-five years of age, who he said was his daughter. He obtained board and lodging from Percy Lumsden, manager, City Buffet Hotel, to the amount of £lO by falsely representing he was employed by the Stock Department. Offender is well known in Auckland, and is supposed to own trotting-horses there.
Wellington. —lsth March last, on warrant for failing to provide for the future maintenance of his unborn illegitimate child, James Moulton Burgess, age thirty, height sft. 7 in., plasterer and traveller, medium build, fair complexion, dark-brown hair, clean-shaved, hair inclined to ourl over forehead, false teeth set with gold; dressed in blue sac suit, and generally wears a black hard hat. He was a member of the Bth Contingent, and was employed travelling for Mr. Ayers, Chemist, Wellington. Photograph filed in the Inspector’s Office, Wellington. Complainant, Ivy Emily Dunham, Wellington. The offender was seen in Sydney on 2nd July, 1907, by Detective J. Cassells, Wellington police. (See Police Gazette, 1907, page 110.)
Wellington. —22nd May.last, on warrant for disobeying an order of Court to pay ss. a week for the maintenance 'of his child in the Wellington Receiving Home, Archibald Burdett, age twenty eight, height sft. lljin., labourer, native of Australia, fresh complexion, dark-brown hair, hazel eyes, scar on right forearm ; is generally employed as wharf labourer. On the 20th May last he was in arrears £l4 ss. (See Police Gazette, 1906, page 315.)
Temuka. —4th December last, on three warrants of commitment for twenty-eight days in default of payiug £5 4s. fine and costs for breaches of a prohibition order, John William Ramm, age about thirty-seven, height 6ft., tailor and cutter, native of England, strong build, dark eyes, dark complexion, black hair, usually clean-shaved except dark moustache; well dressed, and usually wears a tall hat; smart, gentlemanly appearance.
Invercargill. —About January, 1905, on warrant for failing to provide for the maintenance of his illegitimate child, Walter Andrews, age twenty-six, height 5 ft. 6 in., farmer, native of New Zealand, pale complexion, brown curly hair, (urned-up nose, heavy brown moustache only; generally well-dressed in light-grey suit and brown Dr. Jim hat. Is supposed to be identical with Valentine Andrews, returned trooper of the Bth Contingent. His mother is said to reside at New Brighton, Christchurch. The former warrant cancelled, and a fresh warrant issued on the 11th April, 1907. (See Police Gazette, 1905, pages 126 and 134.)
