PERSONS WANTED.

Auckland.— 3oth December, 1905, on warrant for false pretences on Charles Kalman, hotelkeeper, Rhys Williams, age forty-six, height 5 ft. 10 in., school-teacher, native of New Zealand, slim build, ruddy complexion, dark-brown moustache ; dressed in black coat and vest with white spots, and baggy khaki riding-trousers. He obtained £4 from complainant by means of a valueless cheque.

Waipawa. —3lst March last, on warrant for indecently assaulting Mary Catherine Thacker, man, name unknown, age about thirty-four, height about 5 ft. 7 in., thick-set build, dark complexion, dark moustache, beard supposed cropped; dressed in dark suit and cap.

New Plymouth.— sth instant, on warrant for forging and uttering a cheque to W. H. Broome for £l7, purporting to be signed by George W. Heslop, farmer, Bell Block, John Higgins, age twenty-four, height 5 ft. 6 in., labourer and jockey, native of New Zealand, slight build, fresh complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, thin features, clean-shaved, rather square shoulders, which seem to rise, result of accident; wears a dark-worsted suit, blue ground with reddish mixture, the vest buttons high up, dark-grey tweed soft hat rather wide brim. Accused was working for Mr. Heslop, and stole a blank cheque, which he filled in for above amount, and obtained a blue-serge suit and underclothing from Mr. Broome to the

value of £5 lbs. 2d. He is identical with John James Reid. (See Police. Gazette, 1906, pages 2 and 82.)

Palmerston North. —14th ultimo, on warrant for false pretences on Cyril K. Whale, jeweller, George Groves, age twenty-one, height 5 ft. 7 in. or 8 in., bricklayer’s labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fair hair and complexion, no hair on face ; dressed in grey suit with grey cap or brown slouch hat; is accompanied by his wife, age about twenty-three. Offender stole six cheques from Thomas Henry Roil, Dannevirke, and filled in one for £8 4s. 6d., which he gave to complainant in payment for a gold brooch, and received in change £7 2s.

Shannon. —3oth ultimo, that a notice of fine may be served on him for procuring liquor for a prohibited person, ’William Yold, age twenty-eight, height 6ft., labourer, native of Sweden, medium build, sandy complexion and hair, cleanshaved except small sandy moustache, walks very erect; generally dressed in black clothes and hard black hat.

Masterton. —6th ultimo, on warrant for deserting his wife, Ann Catherine Dudley, at Masterton, John Dudley, age thirty-eight, height 5 ft. 5 in., farmer, native of England, stout build, swarthy complexion, brown hair, clean-shaved except dark-brown moustache, dirty appearance, fond of drink ; dressed in dark-tweed suit.

Wellington.— 2nd March last, on warrant for theft of £lO 2s. 6d., money of the New Zealand Times Company, John T. Kelly, age about thirty, height about 5 ft. 10 in., clerk, native of Tasmania, medium to slight build, dark almost black hair, clean-shaved, except small dark moustache, sallow complexion, dark-brown eyes, rather thin face, long straight nose, cigarette-smoker, fond of drink ; usually dressed in dark sac suit, hard black hat, black lace-up boots, white shirt, stand-up collar, respectable appearance. Supposed to have gone to Hobart, where his father keeps an hotel, and will probably be accompanied by a woman, whom he says is his wife, age about thirty, medium build, rather short, dark-brown hair and eyes, rather plain looking. The accused was employed as chief clerk for the above company, and failed to account for money received. Other charges pending.

Wellington.— l6th March last, on warrant for false pretences on Walter Smart, pawnbroker, Henry Withers, age thirty-one, height 5 ft. 4-J in., labourer, native of England, pale complexion, light-brown hair, blue eyes. He obtained a mortgage from complainant by fraudulent statements. Offender is not identical with George, alias John Henry Williams, who is now undergoing a sentence at Waiotapu. Motueka.— Bth. November, 1905, on warrant for failing to provide for the maintenance of his illegitimate child, Reginald age twenty, height 5 ft. 7 in. or 8 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, dark complexion, blue eyes, brown hair. Supposed to be in the North Island.

Christchurch. —sth instant, on warrant for false pretences on the Christchurch Cash Drapery Company, Henry J. Smith, age about forty-five, height about 6 ft., supposed labourer or butcher, native of England, ydark complexion, slight build, full whiskers, beard, and moustache, whiskers tinged with grey; dressed in grey-tweed suit and soft-felt hat. He purchased goods to the value of £3 Is. 7d., and gave a valueless cheque for £3 10s.

Christchurch. — 10th ultimo, on warrants of commitment to Lyttelton Gaol for one month and forty-eight hours in default of paying £6 4s. and 19s. Bd. for obscene language and wilful damage, Mary Kerr, age twenty-six, height 5 ft. 3 in., prostitute, native of New Zealand, fresh complexion, fair hair, strong build, blue eyes, good looking; may be accompanied by her husband, Arthur Kerr, age twenty-five, height 5 ft. 8 in., labourer, native of Scotland, grey eyes, brown moustache only, medium build, pale complexion, talkative, and lives on his wife’s prostitution.

Timaru. —2nd or 3rd instant, on warrant for theft of a cheque for £5 17s. (recovered), property of William Bond, farmer, A. T. White (name probably fictitious), age twentyseven, height 5 ft. 6 in., labourer, slight build, brown hair, small dark moustache only; dressed in dark clothes and cap. Complainant lost a number of cheques when driving to Timaru, and the above one was cashed by offender at the Commercial Hotel, Timaru.

Waitati. —Ist instant, for escaping from Seacliff Asylum, Lee Gye, age sixty, height 5 ft. 3 in., native of China, florid complexion, long dark hair, beard and moustache; dressed in faded tweed suit, hair braided. He was committed from Dunedin in 1904.
