PERSONS WANTED.

Auckland. —On or about March last, on warrant for deserting his wife, JEANNE PRUTER, at Ponsonby, William Francis Frederick Pruter, age thirty-six, height 5 ft. 11 in., a cook, native of Germany, slight build, sallow complexion, brown eyes, brown hair and moustache, stoops when walking ; fond of drink.

Pukekohe. a chestnut pony (recovered), the property of Arthur Fausett, value £5, William Johnston (name probably fictitious), age about thirty, height 5 ft. 3 in. or 4 in., a gumdigger, medium build, dark hair, short whiskers and moustache, a very noticeable scar on upper lip ; dressed in dark clothes and long overcoat.

Taupo. —About 17th ultimo, on warrant for theft of a black gelding pony, about 14 hands high, branded “ W ” on near shoulder, not shod, also a cream-coloured pony branded M on shoulder, about 13 hands high, both Maori-bred, the property of Hepere Northcroft, value about £l4, Maurice Morine, age thirty, height 5 ft. 6in., supposed colonial, medium build, fresh complexion, nose thin and pointed, small sandy moustache only ; dressed in brown hat and leggings. The cream-coloured pony was sold by offender to Mrs. Bates for £3 10s., and was recovered by Constable Jackson, Mangaweka police. Offender had the black pony with him, and said he was going to his brother’s place at Ashhurst.

Napier.—l6th ultimo, on warrant for failing to provide for the maintenance of his illegitimate child, Oscar Henry McKechnie, age twenty-five, height 5 ft. 7 in., labourer and clerk, native of New South Wales, medium build, dark hair, dark-sallow complexion, small dark moustache only ; dressed in dark-grey coat and vest, black trousers, drab Chesterfield coat, and black hard felt hat. Complainant, Nora Elizabeth Batey, domestic, Hastings.

Moawhango. —About 26th July last, on warrant for theft from Ileperi Pickarangi of a gentlemen’s saddle, a thick brown saddle-cloth, a nearly new double-reined bridle, with half-round buckles, large rings, an old double-reined bridle with a new headpiece, a pair of white blankets, a pair of sheets, a pair of men’s light lace-up boots size 8, small toe-caps, a large dark-brown opossum rug lined with green flannel, and £7 in silver, total value £l9 55., J. Wallace, alias James Newberry, alias Brandon, alias Charles Gordon, age twenty, height 5 ft. 2£in., a groom, native of New Zealand, dark-brown hair, hazel eyes, long nose, bushy eyebrows ; dressed in dark suit and light cap. Is well known to horsey men and jockeys. His parents, named Newberry, formerly resided at Havelock. He sold the saddle and a bridle to J. H. Heron, of Hastings, with the horse he is charged with stealing from Thomas Chase. He was going under the name of Price at Kuripango, and may be found wearing the stolen boots, as he left his old ones at Heperi’s place. Offender is also charged with breaking and entering the dwelling of William McCauley, about the 23rd July last, and stealing therefrom a nearly new tartanplaid shawl about 12 ft. long by 9 ft. wide, a white-silk handkerchief, a grey-woollen shirt, and an old pair of men’s boots ; value, £2 12s. 6d. Masterton. —l6th ultimo, on warrant for forging and uttering a oheque for £l3 18s. to Boyd and Cook, grocers, Masterton, Harry Haystead, age thirty-two, height 5 ft. 10 in., labourer, native of Victoria, stout build, fresh complexion, clean-shaved except fair ginger - coloured moustache, dark-brown hair, long sharp slightly Roman nose, round-shouldered, stoops when walking; dressed in grey coat and vest, saddle-tweed pants, and soft black hat. Is supposed identical with man, name unknown, suspected of horse-stealing from Prenter and Vile, Pahiatua. (See Police Gazette, 1904, page 251.)

Masterton.— Bth ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Wellington Prison for seven days in default of paying 15s. for medical treatment for drunkenness, John Jennings Hiley, age forty-four, height 5 ft. 6in., a labourer, native of Victoria, medium build, fresh complexion, fair hair, clean-shaved except ginger moustache ; dressed in a shabby brown-tweed suit.

Wellington.— Bth instant, on warrant for disobeying an order of Court to pay £1 ss. a week towards the maintenance of his wife, Alfred Charles Whitford, age about forty, height 5 ft. 11 in., a baker, native of New Zealand, well built, dark hair, full heavy dark beard. He is accompanied by Mary Gunter, who passes as his wife, and has four young children from seven months to five years of age with her. Description: Age about twenty-eight, height about sft., thin build, thin face, brown hair, blue eyes, clear complexion; was wearing a green dress; children all dressed in red. On the 29th ultimo he was in arrears the sum of £B.

Wellington.— 6th instant, that he may be interviewed respecting Elizabeth Hille, missing since 1898, Andie Arthur Miller, age about forty, height sft. 10in., engineer, supposed native of Scotland, well built, fresh complexion, usually clean-shaved except a medium-sized brown moustache, erect carriage, good appearance; dressed in dark suit. Was last heard of at Marton in August, 1898. (See Police Gazette , 1898, page 131.)

Clyde Quay (Wellington).— 2lst ultimo, with a view of compelling him to comply with an order of Court to pay 6s. a week towards the support of his daughter in the Industrial School, Auckland, James Hendry Elliott Tyson, age about twenty-eight, height about 5 ft. 10 in. or 11 in., a butcher and labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, light-brown hair and small moustache. On the 7th ultimo he was in arrears the sum of £3 18s.

Christchurch.— 3rd instant, on warrant for failing to provide for the maintenance of his illegitimate child, Richard Kerslake, age twenty, about 5 ft. 9 in., labourer, native of Tasmania, stout build, broad-shouldered, ruddy complexion, blue eyes, dark hair worn over the forehead; dressed in dark navy-blue coat and vest, grey striped trousers and black wide-awake had with a red-and-black ribbon. Complainant, Jane Wright, domestic, Linwood.

Kurow. — 7th instant, on warrant for failing to provide for the maintenance of his illegitimate child, Alexander McKinnon, age twenty-two, height 5 ft. 7 in., a labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, dark complexion and hair, clean-shaved except very small dark moustache. Complainant, Alice Young, domestic.

Dunedin. — 9th instant, with a view of compelling him to contribute towards the support of his illegitimate child, an inmate of Caversham Industrial School, Leonard McFarlane, age about twenty-three, height 5 ft. 6 in. or 7 in., a blacksmith, native of New Zealand, rather strong build, -dark hair and complexion, blue eyes, dark moustache only, face inclined to be pimply.

Cromwell. —-3rd instant, on warrant for deserting his wife, Margaret McGeorge, at Cromwell, James McGeorge, age about thirty-six, height 5 ft. 5 in. or 6 in., a dredgemaster, medium build, very fair hair and complexion, blue eyes, small fair moustache only, slightly stooped, rolls slightly when walking, generally wears a cap. Will probably attempt to leave the colony.

Invercargill.— 2nd ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Invercargill Prison for forty-eight hours in default of paying 15s. fine and costs for drunkenness, James Wilson, age thirty-four, height 6 ft., farm labourer, native of Ireland, medium build, dark complexion, brown hair, darkbrown moustache, blue eyes, slouching gait, dressed in an old dark tweed suit, and dirty fawn-coloured soft hat.
