Deserting Wives and Families, &c.

Wellington. — Michael Ambrose is charged on warrant with failing to provide for the maintenance of his child. Description : A native of New Zealand, labourer and shearer, twenty-six years of age, about 5 ft. 6 in. high, stout build, fresh complexion, clean-shaved except fair moustache. Is sometimes employed as billiard - marker. Complainant : Maggie Bresnahan, Beach Road, Petone. (See Police Gazette, 1901, pages 74 and 194; and 1902, page 116.)

Christchurch. — Lincoln Hubert Bernard is charged on warrant with deserting his children. Description : A native of England, canvasser, thirty-three years of age, about 5 ft. 9 in. or 10 in. high, clear complexion, straight black hair, black beard whiskers and moustache, small patch of grey on side of beard, cataract in right eye, stout build, walks quickly with long strides, wears spectacles ; usually wears a blue covert coat with velvet collar, blue trousers, and hard hat. Was last heard of in Melbourne.

Christchurch. — James Moraghan is charged on wairant with deserting his wife, Charlotte Moraghan, since the sth instant. Description: A native of New Zealand, a groom and jockey, twenty-two years of age, 5 ft. 5 in. high, light build, fiesh complexion, dark hair, grey eyes; supposed to have come to Wellington. He was arrested at Pahiatua in 1901 for failing to provide for his illegitimate child by complainant.

Christchurch.— Walter Joseph Guy is charged on warrant with disobeying an order of Court to pay 15s. a week for the maintenance of his wife. Description: A native of New Zealand, a wharf-labourer, twenty-three years of age, 5 ft. 6 in. high, fair complexion, auburn hair, blue eyes, clean-shaved ; usually dressed in brown-tweed sac suit and straw hat with red band. Lyttelton. —Frederick Powell Whitemarsh, charged with failing to provide for the maintenance of his illegitimate child, has been arrested by Sergeant J. Dougan, Nelson police.

Waimate. — William O’Shea is charged on warrant with deserting his wife, Mary O’Shea, since the Bth instant. Description : A native of Ireland, a blacksmith, thirty-two years of age, 5 ft. 6 in. high, medium build, fair complexion and hair, moustache only. In April last he was working with a threshing-mill about Ashburton or Methven.

Dunedin. —Frank Belesky, charged with deserting his wife and children, has been arrested by Constable W. Hilliard, Palmerston police.

Description : A native of New Zealand, labourer, about twenty-five years of age, 5 ft. 7 in. high, medium build, slightly stooped shoulders, dark complexion, dark-brown hair, dark eyes, no hair on face ; usually wears a light-tweed suit and black Dr. Jim hat. About the 17th ultimo he was in Wellington, but no trace can now be obtained of him there. His father formerly kept an hotel in South Dunedin. Complainant: Mary Fitzgerald.

Riverton.— Charles Cameron is charged on warrant with failing to provide for the maintenance of his illegitimate child. Description: A native of New Zealand, a labourer and shearer, twenty-four years of age, 5 ft. 6 in. high, fair complexion, small fair moustache only, round features, medium build, peculiar look about the eyes which are always bloodshot, thin eyelashes; plays the clarionet. Supposed to have come to the North Island. Complainant: Christina Saunders, domestic, Riverton.

Invercargill. — Anthony Benjamin Tanner (known as Tom Tanner) is charged on warrant with failing to provide for the maintenance of his unborn illegitimate child. Description : A native of Victoria, labourer, about twentyeight years of age, 5 ft. 7 in. high, stout build, dark hair, clean-shaved except dark moustache. He is said to have left the Bluff by the s.s. “ Westralia” on 10th June last for Hobart or Melbourne. Complainant : Ada Lawton, domestic, Invercargill.

Invercargill.— Andrew Hunter is charged on warrant with failing to provide for the maintenance of his illegitimate child. Description: A native of New Zealand, boiler-maker, about twenty-one years of age, about 5 ft. 3 in. high, stout build, pale complexion, fair hair, dark-grey eyes, flat nose, thick lips, a piece broken off upper centre tooth, no hair on face, drags his feet when walking. He is supposed to have left the Bluff on the 21st ultimo for Lyttelton, and may attempt to get to South Africa. (See Police Gazette, 1901, page 206.)

Invercargill. Robert Featherstone Wells is charged on warrant with deserting his wife, Emily Fanny Wells, since the 20th ultimo. Description: A native of New South Wales, labourer and shearer, forty-eight years of

age, about 5 ft. 9 in. high, medium build, grey hair, blue eyes, clean-shaved except grey moustache, florid complexion, long eck, walks erect with toes slightly turned in ; usually wears dark vicuna suit and dark soft-felt hat. He is patentee of Wells’s sheep-shears, and is said to be accompanied by a widow named Lily Scott, a colonial, about twenty-six years of age, darkish complexion, about sft. 2in. high.
