Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &c.

Auckland. —Samuel Hughes, stevedore, Lyttelton, reports stolen from him, on the s.s. “ Moura,” on the 18th ultimo, a ladies’ silver Geneva open-faced watch, dent in side, white dial, no glass on face, and a ladies’ long gold chain with short links ; value, £3 ss. Identifiable.

Auckland. —Florence A. Tyrer, school-teacher, Stratford, reports stolen from her bedroom in Kidd’s Hotel, on the 4th or sth instant, two £lO notes and twelve £1 notes. Not identifiable. Suspicion attached to Joseph Raw, colonial, about thirty years of age, 5 ft. 6 in. high, dark-brown hair and moustache, high oheek-bones, pointed chin, freckled face, mark or scar on bridge of nose; dressed in blue-cloth suit, grey Dr. Jim hat, white tie ; frequents racecourses. He was staying at the hotel, and is supposed to have gone to New Plymouth.

Freeman’s Bay (Auckland). Samuel Little Barry, draper, reports stolen from the verandah of his house, Anglesea Street, on the 22nd or 23rd ultimo, a youth’s brown-check pattern waterproof with cape, no sleeves, “ Smith and Caughey ”on tab ; value, £2. Identifiable.

Newton (Auckland). — Nellie Robertson reports stolen from the passage of her boardinghouse, Liverpool Street, on the 14th or 15th ultimo, a flax kit containing four £1 notes, a shilling, a cheque (No. Y. 21581) on the National Bank of New Zealand for £2 2s. drawn by John Law, a number of tram tickets, a black-leather purse, a pair of ladies’ blackkid gloves, and a number of tram and ’bus tickets; value, £6 11s. sd. Cheque and purse identifiable.

Ponsonby (Auckland). —Henry Jones, London Street, cabinetmaker, reports that on the 22nd ultimo his dwelling was broken into, and about ss. in silver and a needle-case resembling a purse stolen ; total value, 7s.

Ponsonby. —Rev. W. D. Purton reports that on the 23rd ultimo his house in Emmett Street was broken into and the following stolen: Six table-knives and six dessertknives (maker Lockwood), six E.P. dinner-forks, six dessertforks, six table and six dessert spoons; they were all new, and wrapped in tissue paper: value, £3 3s.

Devonport (Auckland.) —John Tobias, bootmaker, reports that on the 29th ultimo his dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen: A plain gold locket set with diamond in centre, J. T. in raised letters on the reverse side; a massive gold ring with fancy tracings, J. T. engraved on the inside ; a gold bar ; a pair of gold fan-shaped earrings set with ruby and emerald in centre, emerald above the ruby : value, £4 ss. Suspicion attached to two men, names unknown. Descriptions: First, about twenty-eight years of age, about 5 ft. 9 in. high, medium athletic build, sloped shoulders, full face, light-brown moustache, grey suit, and black hard hat; Second, about sft. 7in. high, medium build, square shoulders, fair bushy moustache and eyebrows, buff-coloured coat, tweed trousers.

Waikaremoana. —Theft of George Steele’s watch, ring, &o. : Henry Beauchamp has been charged by District Constable Tarr with the offence and sentenced to three months’ labour : property not recovered.

Carterton. —Theft of tin box and contents, the property of Henry Franks : On the 7th instant a purse was found on the railway-line near Carterton, containing two cheques for £4 each, signed by Hart Udy, jun. The purse and cheques were in the box when stolen.

Wellington. —George Price, jockey, reports stolen from the Pier Hotel, on the 25th ultimo, a Gladstone bag containing a new light-coloured tweed suit, “ Kitto and Graham ” on tab, a grey-tweed coat and trousers of another suit, an old pair of brown trousers, a pair of gold-and-greenstone sleevelinks (G.P. engraved on them), a pair of elastic-side slippers, a cheque-book on the National Bank of New Zealand, Wanganui, and a Post-Office Savings-Bank book issued at Wanganui; value, £lO. Identifiable. The Gladstone bag was found on the Reclaimed Land, Jervois Quay, cut open, and the contents taken.

Wellington. —Miss Jane Mary Malcolm, 52, Wellington Terrace, reports stolen from her bedroom, on the 29th ultimo, an 18-carat hoop ring set with two diamonds and a sapphire, value £2O ; also a gold single-bar brooch with a gold bird in the centre picking at a sapphire, value £2. Identifiable.

Wellington. —Mrs. Charles Vaughan Kreeft reports that on the 21st ultimo her house at Kelburne Terrace was broken into, and the following stolen : A gold bangle set with thirteen pearls, four gold-washed shirt - studs, and a Bengal razor ; valus, £5. Bangle only identifiable.

Wellington.— Martin Luther Feist, draper, reports that on the 26th ultimo his dwelling at Kilbirnie was broken into, and a gold bar brooch about 2 in. long with plait pattern along the centre stolen; value, 15s. Identifiable.

Wellington. —L. P. Lord, fruiterer, 123, High Street, Christchurch, reports stolen from his bedroom in the Masonic Hotel, on the 23rd ultimo, a nearly new bluemelton three-quarter overcoat with velvet collar, “ Palmer, Lyttelton,” on the tab; value, £4. Identifiable.

Wellington. —Alfred John Lewis, baker, reports stolen rom his bedroom in Kate Baker’s boardinghouse, No. 13, Cambridge Terrace, on the 28th ultimo, a gentlemen’s silver English lever hunting-watch, maker Young, Dunedin, “ Alfred John Lewis ” engraved on inside and “ A. J. Lewis ” on outside of case, a silk guard with gold medal attached, inscribed “ Presented to A. J. Lewis by his fellow-workmen, August 8, 1896 ” ; a silver-mounted greenstone pendant; a gold sparf-pin set with reddish-coloured stone in centre about the size of a threepenny-piece: value, £7. Identifiable. A man was heard in the room, and on being pursued broke through the window and escaped. No reliable description can be given of him.

Christchurch.— Mahomed Dinn, hawker, Manchester Street, reports stolen from him when drunk, on the 25th or 26th ultimo, a gentlemen’s 18-carat gold ring set with a large diamond weighing 1§ carat (had a slight flaw), an 18-carat gold ring set with two diamonds, ruby in centre, and £4 13s. 9d.; total value, £SO 13s. 9d. Suspicion attached to Thomas Henry, alias Thomas Henry Calvert. Description : A native of Auckland, labourer, twenty-six years of age, 5 ft. 5 in. high, fair complexion, light-brown hair, dark-blue eyes, long nose (see Police Gazette, 1900, page 27).

Ashburton. —Lionel Cobidick, labourer, reports stolen from his dwelling, on the 29th ultimo, seven £1 notes, Is. 6d. in silver, and a dark-brown leather purse, one inside pocket broken. Suspicion attached to W. Coleman, who was seen near the house and left by train for Timaru, booking his swag for Christchurch. Description : About twenty-two years of age, about 5 ft. 9 in. high, medium build, dark complexion, dark-brown hair, clean-shaved except small dark moustache, cast in one eye ; dressed in dark-tweed coat and vest, blue-dungaree trousers, and soft brown hat.

Alexandra. — Sarah Cummock reports that on the 28th or 29th ultimo her dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen: A ladies’ whioe-muslin dress, two pink woollen singlets, a blue front, a pair of slippers, a pair of ladies’ gloves, a greenstone brooch (N.Z. in gold on it, letter at each end), a gold bangle set with two rubies and two diamonds ; value, £6 4s. Identifiable.

Nightcaps. —C. P. Roberts, commission agent, reports stolen from his bedroom in Mrs. Fitzsimmons’s Hotel, Wairio, on the 15th or 16th ultimo, a gentlemen’s gold ring set with three rubies; value, £3 10s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to J. Forde (name probably fictitious), about twenty-two years of age, thick-set build, has a heavy dark moustache.

Orepuki. —John Wilson and Richard Moore, miners, report stolen from their bedroom in Wilson’s Family Hotel, on the 7th ultimo, a gold hunting Geneva lever watch (No. 38656), a gold Maltese-cross medal, an imitation-gold chain, the property of John Wilson, value £l2; a silver Geneva lever hunting-watch (No. 176437), a double silver chain, four coins, and a Jubilee farthing, the property of Richard Moore, value £5. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, about 5 ft. 7 in. high, medium build, fair complexion, clean-shaved, has a small white patch on side of jaw; dressed in brown suit, light-coloured hat. Is supposed identical with J. J. F. Smith (see following paragraph).

Dunedin. —J. J. F. Smith, charged on warrant with theft of a watch from James MoCoy, is identical with Taylor, alias Smith, suspected of theft from the Caledonian Hotel, Napier (see Police Gazette, 1902, pages 16 and 17), and is also supposed identical with man, name unknown, suspeoted of theft of watches at Orepuki (see preceding paragraph).
