Auckland. — Charles Ward (may be known as Alfred Ward) is charged on warrant with a breach of the Chattels Act on or about the 9th January, 1902. Description: A grocer, about thirty-five years of age, about -5 ft. lOin. high, dark complexion, dark moustache, probably scrubby beard, dark clothes, skull-cap or dark Dr. Jim hat. Offender sold certain chattels without consent of the grantee, John Snaith. He left the district about the 20th December last. He has a large square tent, and may be found at seaside resorts or on the gumfield; his wife and three children will probably be with him.

Auckland.— John Broughton Stafford is charged on warrant with false pretences on William Mathieson, licensee, Palls Hotel, between the 23rd and 26th December, 1901. Description: A native of Yorkshire, England, about forty eight years of age, about 6 ft. 2 in. high, military appearance, blue piercing eyes, fair complexion, clean-shaved except brown moustache ; dressed in light pepper-and-salt-coloured shabby tweed suit, black-and-white plaid cap, well educated, very talkative, bullet-wound in right leg and spearwound in left side near the heart. He obtained refreshment, board, and lodging to the amount of £5 ss. by falsely representing that he was manager of the Waitekauri Goldmining Company.

Hastings.— Charles Elllis is charged on warrant of commitment to Napier Gaol for one month in default of paying £3 10s., fine and costs for being found on lioensed premises while prohibited. Description: A native of America, a sawyer, forty-eight years of age, 5 ft. 5 in. high, fresh complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, thick nose ; dressed in dirty brown coat and cap, dungaree trousers (see Police Gazette, 1901, page 152).

Hastings. George Edhouse, alias Henry Edgehurst, is charged on warrant of commitment to Napier Gaol for one month in default of paying £3 125., fine and costs for procuring liquor for a prohibited person. Description : A native of England, a labourer and timber clerk, fifty-two years of age, 5 ft. 9fin. high, dark complexion, dark hair turning grey, brown eyes (see Police Gazette, 1902, page 31) ; dressed in dirty brown suit and soft black hat.

Hawera.— James Dwyer is charged on warrant with having, on the 14th December, 1901, obtained credit by fraud to the amount of £245, from Arthur Albert Fantham, auctioneer. Description: A native of Ireland, farmer, twenty-eight years of age, 5 ft. 11 in. high, strong, active build, about 14 stone weight, black hair, slight black moustache only, grey eyes, nose slightly turned up at the point; may be wearing a blue knickerbocker suit. He recently had a farm at Tariki Road, near Inglewood, and formerly came from Humphrey’s Yalley, Hokitika. A woman named Mrs. McFadgen was staying at the Pier Hotel, Wellington, with offender. She left for Auckland on the 16th ultimo, and may be with him there, as letters were recently received from him posted at Auckland. He purchased the cattle at auction and undertook not to dispose of them for a month, but sold them within a week, and appropriated the money.

Christchurch.— Theodore alias Albert Harwood, Reid, and Ward, charged with forgery and uttering: Offender Reid has been arrested by Detective R. Marsack, Christchurch police, on information supplied by Acting-Detective A. Cameron, Wellington police, and remanded. He is identical with Joseph Jackson, convicted of forgery in Dunedin (see Police Gazette, 1900, page 93). The third offender, Ward, is identical with Patrick McKay, convicted of housebreaking at Dunedin (see Police Gazette, 1901, page 11), and is now supposed to be in Wellington.

Lyttelton. James Wilford McKee ver, alias Mclvor, alias MclYon, is charged on warrant with having, on the 25th ultimo, damaged the property of Michael Roche to the value of £35. Description : A native of London or Scotland, of Irish parents, fireman, about thirty-seven years of age, about 5 ft. 7 in. high, medium build, fair complexion and hair, clean-sbaved except small fair moustache, round features, large brown eyes, hoarse voice, “ Faith Hope and Charity” tattooed on one forearm; usually wears darkblue serge suit, has a dark-cloth sac coat with velvet collar, black-leather shoes, and hard brown hat. He was boarding with complainant, and wilfully destroyed the furniture to the above amount. He is supposed to have gone by the s.s. “ Koonya” to Greymouth.

Lyttelton. —Donald Macßae, charged with default of fine and costs for being on licensed premises when prohibited, has been arrested by the Lyttelton police on charges of theft, and remanded to Dunedin.

Timaru.— William Gunn is charged on warrant with false pretences on John Dore, hotelkeeper, on the 4th ultimo. Description: Supposed native of England, commercial traveller, forty-six year? of age, 5 ft. 8 in. high, medium build, fair hair tinged with grey, long sandy beard whiskers and moustache, respectable appearance, walks awkwardly with toes turned out; dressed in dark suit and hard black-felt hat. Supposed to have come to Wellington. Offender obtained £4 19s. by falsely representing he was still employed by Mr. Waghorne, of Dunedin.

Lumsden. —George Carlyle, charged with false pretences on George Johnson, has been arrested by Constable J. Stanley, Rakaia police, on information supplied by Constable Connolly, Dunedin police.

Kaitangata.— William Burns is charged on warrant of commitment to Dunedin Gaol for three months in default of paying £4 55., fine and costs for resisting the police. Description : A native of New Zealand, labourer, about twentyseven years of age, 6 ft. 8 in. high, medium build, fresh complexion, brown hair, greyish eyes, clean-shaved except moustache, square shoulders, holds his head down when walking; dressed in brown-tweed suit; and soft black-felt hat. He was working on a farm near Stirling, and left there on the 29th ultimo.
