Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person &c.

Auckland.— William Frost reports that on the sth August last his dwelling in Cook Street was broken into, and the following stolen : A keyless open-faced plated watch, pare of the metal worn off, showing brass underneath ; a gold chain, about 12 in. long, the ends fastened together with a split ring ; a half-sovereign, and about £1 in mixed silver. Watch and chain only identifiable. Suspicion attached to Harriet Baker, a native of New Zealand, a prostitute, thirty-eight years of age, 5 ft. 3 in. high, slim build, sallow complexion, dark-brown hair, and dark-blue eyes.

Avondale. —Edward Philip Turner, surveyor, reports stolen from a surveyor’s tent in New Lynn an Abney surveyors’ level, about 4in. long, D and E scratched on arc; value, £2 10s.

Hastings. —Nioholas Wilson, labourer, reports stolen from him when asleep on a sofa in the Railway Hotel, on the 28th ultimo, six £1 notes. Not identifiable.

Wellington. —W. W. Collins, M.H.R., reports stolen from his bedroom in the Pier Hotel, on the 9th instant, a pair of nearly new black-calf buttoned boots, English make, size 6 ; value, £1 ss. Identifiable.

Wellington. —Edith Woods reports stolen from a case in the passage of the Wellington Dining-rooms, Lambton Quay, between the sth and 10th ultimo, six tin boxes, 12 in. by 9 in., branded “ Eliana Ceylon Tea,” each containing 51b. of tea ; value, £1 15s. Not identifiable.

Wellington. —Dr. Fell reports stolen from his surgery in Willis Street, on the 12th instant, a brown-cloth sac coat, “King and Muir” on the tab, a quantity of correspondence in the pockets ; also a brown-leather hand-bag with steel frame : value, £3 lls. Identifiable.

Mount Cook (Wellington). —Walter Lange, 41 Thompson Street, reports that on the Ist instant his dwelling was broken into and a £1 note, 4s. in silver, and 6d. in coppers stolen from a drawer in his bedroom.

Mount Cook (Wellington). —Charles Baker, labourer, reports that on the 29th August last his dwelling in Little Taranaki Street was broken into, and the following stolen : Six £1 notes, a gentlemen’s nearly new 18-carat gold double fetter-link chain, with a jubdee sovereign attached, the edges much worn ; value, in all, £ls 15s.

Mount Cook (Wellington). —Mrs. R. C. Hunter, Oxford Road, reports that on the Bth instant her dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen from a drawer : Four £1 notes, two sovereigns, about Bs. in silver, and a bottle of whisky about three-parts full; total value, £6 12s.

Christchurch. —James Lloyd, barman, reports stolen from his bedroom in the Caf6 Hotel, on the 20th ultimo, a gentlemen’s 9-carat gold albert chain, fetter-link pattern; value, £5. Identifiable.

Addington. —Joseph McGuire, labourer, reports stolen from the Black Horse Hotel, on the sth instant, a gentlemen’s old-fashioned slanting-frame bicycle, No. 70 on front part of frame, and a Martin’s nickel-plated acetylene-gas lamp ; value, £5. Identifiable.

Phillipstown.— William Johncook, gardener, reports that on the 12th instant his dwelling was broken into, and a wooden box containing sixteen sovereigns stolen. A knife with letter D on the handle was found in the kitchen, and the marks of tennis-shoes were found under the window, by which entrance had been effected.

Timaru. —Joseph Shepperd Bennett, second-hand dealer, reports that on the 14th or 15th instant his shop was broken into, and the following stolen : Tnree Swiss open-faced metal keyless watches (one has a black case, with white-metal chain attached, at the end of which is a very small coin); eleven open-faced improved Waterbury keyless watches ; a hunting English lever watch, maker Rotherham, hands missing; a hunting English lever, strong steel chain attached ; numbers of watches unknown ; eight white-metal watch-chains, with plain links about Jin. long, and six steel chains. Identifiable. Total value, £l3 12s.

Temuka. John Low, labourer, reports stolen from his dwelling, between the 24th and 26th ultimo, a silver lever hunting-watch, No. 39250, a silver curb chain attached; value, £5. Identifiable.

(See Police Gazette, 1901, page 85.) Ashburton. —Stanley Edwards, charged with theft from Dr. Charles E. Maude, has been arrested by Acting-Detec-tives J. J. Cassells and A. Cameron, Wellington police. None of the stolen property recovered. He was going under the name of Robert Harrison.

Mornington. —Edward Glaister, Spring Hill Road, reports that on the 10th instant his dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen : A small yellow box, 6 in. by 3 in., with a division in centre, a fox-hunting scene on the cover, containing a gentlemen’s gold albert, with long links connected with a small link, a gold star pendant, inscribed on One side, “ To P. O. Glaister, on severing his connection with the Corps,” monogram D.N.A.V. on the other side ; also some miscellaneous jewellery : value, £lO. Identifiable.
