Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &c.

Auckland. —Mrs. James Mackenzie, Jervois Road, reports supposed stolen from her in Queen Street, on the 4th June last, a ladies’ open-faced 18-carat gold watch, number unknown ; a gentlemen’s 18-carat gold cable chain, compass attached has glass cracked across the centre: value, £35. Identifiable.

Auckland. —Ellen Higgins, West Street, Newton, reports stolen from Gleeson Hotel, Hobson Street, on the 12th instant, a ladies’ nearly new black mackintosh, and a blacksilk umbrella with glass knob ; value, £2 15s. Identifiable.

Paeroa. —Henry Burton Poole, barman and boots at the Royal Mail Hotel, reports stolen from his bedroom, on the 10th instant, a tin box containing a steward’s discharge from the s.s. “ Curragong,” Sydney, and references from the Grand Pier and Grand Hotels, New South Wales, a savings-bank book, a revolver ('320 cartridge) ; gold sleeve-links made from two half-sovereigns joined to a brass disc, relief on half-sove-reigns has been ground down, and radiating lines cut on them, one of the connecting,-lioks broken, and replaced with copper wire; a silver cable chain with ball pendant; also a quantity of clothing: value, £7 7s. 6d. The tin box and clothing have been recovered.

Waihi. —William Howarth, gum-digger, reports that between the 13th ultimo and the 3rd instant his hut at Whare kawa was broken into, and about 1501 b. red, kidney-shaped potatoes stolen. They were an uncommon kind, and may have been taken for seed. Value, 15s.

Manaia. —Mrs. Johanna Tait, licensee Manaia Hotel, reports stolen from a chest of drawers in her bedroom, between the 28th ultimo and the 6r,h instant, a ladies’ gold hunting Geneva watch, No. 102191, J.T. in monogram on case; a fine gold chain about Bin. long with gold knob at the end: value, £ls. Identifiable.

Raetihi. —Robert Lewell reports stolen from his boardinghouse, about the 25th ultimo, a large bed-rug, red and white stripes on one side, all brown on the other, value £1 10s.; and a large white-silk handkerchief about 4 ft. 6 in. square, value £1 Is. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Henry Jeffs, now living at Rotorua.

Palmerston North. —William T. Wood, blacksmith, reports stolen from his dwelling in Ferguson Street, on the 7th or Bth instant, a pair of lace-up boots, small hole in right boot, size 8 ; a pair of tan lace-up boots, small patch on right boot, recently half-soled : value, 17s. 6d. Identifiable.

Eketahuna. —Henry Stuart reports stolen from the till of his hotel, on the 16th ultimo, nine £1 notes, two sovereigns, and £3 13s. 9d. in silver.

Wellington. —James Henry Price reports stolen from the sitting-room of the New-Zealander Hotel, on the 18th instant, a gentlemen’s yellowish-brown mackintosh coat, no cape, some paint-marks on the back; value, £1 ss. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown. Description : About twenty-eight years of age, about 5 ft. Bin. high, medium build, clean-shaved except dark moustache ; dressed in blue- or black-vicuna suit and hard black hat; respectable appearance.

Wellington. —Ernest Watson, labourer, Canvas Town, Marlborough, reports stolen from under the pillow in his bedroom in the Oriental Hotel, on the 13th instant, two £lO notes and a £5 note on the Bank of New Zealand, and four £1 notes, bank unknown.

Manners Street (Wellington). Herman Knigge, labourer, reports stolen from him at the Opera House, on the 14th ultimo, a buckskin purse with clasp, containing eleven sovereigns, a half-sovereign, and 10s. in silver. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, a groom, and Auckland spieler, about twenty-five years of age, 5 ft. 6 in. high, fair complexion, clean-shaved, slight build ; dressed in light-brown suit, light shoes, and skull-cap.

Mount Cook (Wellington). —Dr. Albert Martin reports stolen from a bedroom in his dwelling, lugestre Street, between the sth and 10th instant, an 18-carat gold ring set with a single diamond ; value, £ls. Recovered. Suspicion attached to C. Bowen , who pawned the ring at Joseph Metz’s, Cuba Street. Description : English, about twenty-six years of age, about 5 ft. Bin. high, medium build, fresh complexion, small fair moustache only ; dressed in dark sao suit and black hard hat, and a summer overcoat; respectable appearance. Identifiable.

Denniston. —Bertha Berry, draper, reports stolen from her bedroom, on the 4th instant, five £1 notes, six halfsovereigns, a sovereign, and £2 in half-crowns.

Lyttelton. —Campbell Brown, lioensee of the Canterbury Hotel, reports stolen from his billiard-room, on the 17th or 18th instant, a set of new benzoline billiard-balls, size in., the red ball is very bright, and the dot on spot-ball is very small; value, £2 10s. Not identifiable.

Sheffield. —James Thomas and James Wallis, platelayers, report that on the 10th ultimo their huts were broken into on Racecourse Hill, and £1 14s. 6d., the property of

James Thomas, and 2s. 6d. and three keys on a split-ring, she property of James Wallis, stolen. Other huts were also broken into, and small sums of money (not identifiable) taken, also three old tickets on TattersalPs sweeps, one No. 5000, “T. Bryant” written on them. Total stolen, £1 19s. 10£d.

Sheffield. —Archibald McCorkindale, labourer, reports stolen from his tent at Patterson’s Terrace, Midland Rail-way-works, on the 31st July or Ist ultimo, a £5 note and thrre £1 notes on the Bank of New Zealand, and 3s. in silver. Suspicion attached to two men, names unknown. Descriptions: First, about thirty years of age, stout build, 5 fc. 9 in. high, darkish complexion, full features, cleanshaved except moustache; dressed in blue-dungaree coat, moleskin trousers, and soft-felt hat. Second, about thirty years of ago, about sft. 9 in. high, sharp features, cleanshaved, slight build ; dressed in dark-tweed suit and softfelt hat. Identification doubtful.

Ashburton. —John Mullan’s hotel-bar broken into: William Gray has been arrested for this offence by Constable E. Eade, Ashburton police. Part of the money and cash-box recovered.

Dunedin. —Frank Hyams, jeweller, Princes Street, reports stolen from a showcase in the Grand Hotel, on or about the 6th instant, a greenstone shamrock brooch with gold ball, a greenstone-and-gold scimitar broooh, a greenstone Rondelle and heart two bar brooch, a greenstone battle-axe brooch (gold handle), a greenstone shamrock broooh with gold wire, a gold-mounted cryolite bar brooch, a silvermounted kauri-gum brooch, a large greenstone heart with gold ring, a small greenstone heart with gold ring, a gold-and-greenstone shamrock charm, a greenstone gold-mounted bell charm, a gold-mounted greenstone pendant (long shape), a silver-mounted greenstone pendant (long shape), a greenstone crook pendant with gold ring, a greenstone mere pendant with gold ring, a greenstone small crook pendant with gold ring, a cryolite pendant with gold ring, a greenstone-aud-silver matchbox (greenstone on one side), a pair of goldmounted greenstone links, three gold-mounted greenstone studs, a greenstone collar-stud, a gold-and-greenstone shamrock scarf-pin, a gold-and-greenstone pencil-case (the pencil pulls right out of greenstone tube), a greenstone-and-silver sovereign-case, greenstone on one side (to hold five sovereigns), a greenstone round button-shape stiok-top, a small greenstone Maori chisel, a silver-mounted kea-beak brooch; value, £25.

Dunedin. —Martha Haworth reports that on the 13th instant her dwelling in Maitland Street was broken, into and the following stolen from one of the bedrooms: Ten halfsovereigns, two fine-link gold chains (ladies’ old-fashioned), a gold brooch (horsesboe-and-bar pattern), a gold brooch (worm pattern); a gentlemen’s oval scarf-pin, set with six pearls, blue in centre, one pearl missing; a gold plain bandring, a gold bracelet (interwoven chain), a gold blue-enamelled pencil-case, a gold 22-carat wedding-ring (much worn), a gold keeper-ring (oid-fashioned), a white-bone gold-mounted scarfpin, dog-collar pattern; a ladies’ small gold watch-chain (rope pattern) ; a ladies’ gold hunting-lever, maker P. Adair, engraved case, No. 1013256; an open-faced gold watch, hands broken off, number unknown: total value, £63. Identifiable, except money.

Dunedin. —George Galloway, clerk, Walker Street, reports stolen from his bedroom, on the Bth instant, a New Zealand amateur athletic medal, “ G. Galloway, Wellington, 1893,” on it, and a gold brooch set with cairngorm stone; value, £4 10s.

King Street (Dunedin). Charles Bailey, insurance agent, Forth Place, reports that on the 15th instant his dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen : A small gold brooch set with pearls and two doves, a £1 note, a halfsovereign, two sixpences, and three threepenny-pieces; value, £2 17s. Brooch identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, who was seen coming out of the house. Description : About forty-five years of age, about 5 ft. 7 in. high, light moustache only; dressed in brown sao coat, and a light-brown Dr. Jim hat. --— 3

King Street (Dunedin). —William Noel and George Willip.m Dransfield report stolen from their bedroom in Mrs. Russell’s boardinghouse, George Street, on the 17th instant, a small dark-leather bag-purse, containing three £1 notes, five sovereigns, and four half-sovereigns, the property of W. Noel; a brown-leather Gladstone bag, 18in. by 9 in., containing a £5 note on the Bank of New Zealand, a PostOffice Bank-book, a tobacco-pouch, a pocket-book, and five collars, the property of G. W. Dransfield ; value, £6 10s.

King Street (Dunedin). —Adam Clark, engineer, reports that on the Bth instant his dwelling in Union Street was broken into, and the following stolen : Six £1 notes, a small round gold scarf pin set with diamonds, rubies in centra; a gold bracelet set with diamonds and rubies ; a ladies’ band ring set with opal, “ Patterson” stamped on inside ; a gold two-bar brooch set with pearls and a blue stone, and a silver albert with very long links : value, £lB 15s. Identifiable, except money.

Caversham (Dunedin). Annie Ashman, housekeeper, McGlashan Street, reports stolen from her bedroom, on the 28th ultimo, a gold brooch, true-lover’s knot pattern ; value, 10s. Suspicion attached to William George Meade and George Conroy, industrial-school boys.

Orepuki. —Thomas Powell, inspector co-operative work*, reports stolen from his bedroom, on the 16th or 17th ultimo, eighteen £1 notes, 10s. in silver, a leather purse, and a small silver looket, padlock pattern; value, £lB 12s. Purse and locket only identifiable.
