Deserting Wives and Families, &c.
Auckland.— Frederick J. Perks, alias J. Manley, is charged on warrant with deserting his wife, Jeannie Perks, since the 24th November, 1900. Description: English, a miner, 5 ft. 9 in. or 5 ft. 10 in. high, twenty-seven years of age, dark complexion, clean-shaved except dark moustache, scar on face caused by an accident; dressed in dark-blue serge suit, and black-felt hat. Well known on the Thames, and may have gone to Whangarei or some of the goldfields.
(See Police Gazette, 1900, page 15.) Levin.— -Samuel Giles, charged with failing to support his illegitimate child, has been arrested by Constable T. Breen, Palmerston North police, and remanded.
Christchurch.- Walter Scott, aZias Peel, is charged on warrant with failing to provide for the future maintenance of his illegitimate child. Description: A native of Melbourne, a bookmaker and traveller, about twenty-three years of age, about 5 ft. 7 in. high, medium build, pale features, black, thick, curly hair, clean-shaved; usually dressed in blackserge suit, and black hard hat. Complainant, Margaret Ellis, was living with offender under the name of Harris in Durham Street, Christchurch. He left her and the child destitute there on the 22nd ultimo, and said he was going to Melbourne. (See Police Gazette, 1900, pages 234 and 242.)
Christchurch. — Henry Thompson is charged on warrant with deserting his wife, Mary Thompson, since the 23rd November, 1900. Description: A native of Sweden, a labourer and sailor, forty-three 3 ears of age, about 5 ft. 6 in. high, stout build, short neck, sandy complexion, brown hair and brown beard cut short, heavy brown moustache, rather small blue eyes, rather large nose; dressed in brown-tweed suit and cap. May have gone in the Swedish barque “ Astirion ” to Kaipara.
Timaru. — Charles Gibbs is charged on warrant with failing to provide for the maintenance of his illegitimate ohild. Description : A native of Mew Zealand, a groom or labourer, twenty-one years of age, 5 ft. 6 in. high, medium build, very dark complexion, black hair and eyes, a half- or quarter-caste Maori; generally wears a brown-tweed suit and tweed cap. Was last seen in Timaru on the 14th ultimo. Complainant, Charlotte Elizabeth Dineen, Heaton Street.
Invercargill.— Frank Patrick Loftus is charged on warrant of commitment to Invercargill Gaol for one month in default of paying £3 9s. arrears due for the maintenance of his illegitimate child. Description: A colonial, labourer, thirty-three years of age, 5 ft. high, medium build, fair complexion, brown hair, sandy moustache, the cheeks and chin usually shaved, greyish-blue eyes ; supposed dressed in grey-tweed suit and soft dark hat. May be accompanied by his wife. She is of medium height, slight build, thin features, rather pale comploxion, and dark hair. Offender was ordered to pay 7s. a week, and on the 2nd August last was the above amount in arrears, and was ordered to pay on the Ist ultimo, but failed to do so, and has not been seen since. He may try to leave the colony.
